What's Happening
This week, we hit 143 students who have created fun run profiles and 265 donations going towards this fundraiser.
Our School Fun Run is coming up in just two weeks! Thank you so much for your support so far. We have already raised over $5000 toward our goal of $10,000 for resources and excursions!
Week 1 milestone - was to find the class at Sheffield and Railton Campus with the highest percentage of profiles, the winner of this was 1/2B, and 1/2R. Well done to those 1/2 classes. As a reward, these classes received a special icy pole party.
Week 2 milestone - was to reach $5000 to Slime a staff member. Ms. Leonard was such a good sport to volunteer for this honour. 3/4A and 5/6A achieved their goals and therefore got a chance to slime their teachers.
Week 3 milestone - every student who raises $100 goes in a draw to be one of 10 to win a free canteen lunch voucher.
Kentish Lions Vision screening
This term, we have been fortunate once again to offer the Kentish Lions Vision screening program. The Lions Eye Health Program provides free vision screening for children. This has been offered to classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. It is estimated that 1 in 5 children in Australia have undetected vision problems. Over 80% of what children learn is processed through their eyes, so untreated eye conditions can affect a child’s learning ability, development and self-esteem. This vision screening program can help identify any children who may require further eye examination by an optometrist.
Mt Roland Landcare
On Thursday 22 May Year 5 and 6 students, as a part of their Food and Fibre class assisted the Mt Roland Landcare group with tree planting at Staunton Farm.
The students planted approximately 100 Blackwood seedling. Students learnt that the trees would provide wind break for the cattle on the farm as well as habitat for native animals, birds and insects. The trees also protect the pastures during the summer months by reducing the effects of evaporation.
The seedlings were sourced by the Mt Roland Landcare group from Where the Wild Things Grow, which it is a community not-for-profit nursery run entirely by youth, led by Laura Wild-Smith, who is a Year 11 student at Don College.
Thank you to John and Megan, the Landholders for hosting the event, and to Mt Roland Landcare for the experience. Looking forward to doing it again next year.
Pet Detective - Part 2
Over and Above
A focus at Railton Campus this term has been acknowledging those students who consistently go ‘Over and Above’ in demonstrating great behaviour and a commitment to their learning. Nominated students have participated in Hot Choccy Friday.
Secondary Cross Country
The Sheffield School held its annual Cross Country Carnival recently at the school farm. The course included running around the school farm, circumnavigating the many paddocks and obstacles. As in recent years, students had the opportunity to be “coloured” as they progressed around the course.
The first event of the day was the combined year 7/8 race for both boys and girls. Hailey showed that her extra training in netball and sport and recreation paid dividends as she crossed the line well ahead of Holly in second place and Myesha in third in the Year 7 girls' event. The Year 8 girls saw Chloe blaze the opposition and comfortably win with a six minute margin. Mia and Sophie battled gallantly and filled the second and third places. Congratulations to those girls who tackled the course and finished well coloured and with a smile on their face.
Year 7 boys saw Tarrant come home in first position ahead of the fast-finishing Emmett. Connor followed his brother Emmett home to finish in third place in a very competitive race. The Year 8 boys' event proved to be the closest race of the day with Kolbie battling hard all race to hold off the fast-finishing Harper. Kai filled third place on the dais after working hard to stay in touch with the early leaders.
Year 9 and 10 girls' events revealed few surprises with Bridie going back-to-back in a strong run from the starter's gun to the chequered flag. Imogen continued to build on her training in PE by holding off Abigail by four seconds to collect second. Hailey took an early lead in the Year 9 girls' race and never surrendered it. She finished well ahead of Mia and Sophie who competed gracefully in tutus.
Hudson proved unstoppable in the Year 10 boys’ race, he comfortably defeated Jett and Jack to complete four victories in four years. Well done, Hudson. Special mention to Jack and Jett who chased extremely hard over the 3.2km and finished within a minute of first place. Year 9 boys saw Jacob take an early lead and constantly extend his lead throughout the race. He finished a deserving winner some two and half minutes ahead of Logan in second position, whilst Xavier rounded out the dais in third position.
Congratulations to all students who took up the challenge of completing the course and showing their best effort. The participation and behaviour of those on the course was first class.
Primary Cross Country
Last Tuesday, the K-6 sector of the school competed in the Primary Cross Country held at Sheffield School. The 5/6’s started off the day in great spirits. Although there were a lot of nerves on the start line, students knew their PE training would come in handy for the big race. In the Year 6 girls, Quinn finished in first place and Lauren came a very close second. Our Year 6 girls’ team was also very successful at the North-West Inter-Primary event this Tuesday, with all four athletes finishing within the top 30. Our Year 5 winner was Vienna, who displayed a very strong run all the way around the course. Our runner-up for this event was Isabelle, just one minute behind her. After a lot of competitive talk throughout the week, our Year 6 boys had their eyes on the prize. Max took first position with Will just one second behind him. We were extremely proud of our Year 5 boys who chose friendship over personal gain. Sam finished in first position with his good friend Riley beside him. After recess, our K-4 cohort came out and joined in the fun. From the Year 3/4’s, we would like to congratulate Imogen, Octavia, Benson, and Ollie. Our Early Childhood students were excited and ready to go for their races. We would like to thank our fantastic secondary students and Primary house captains who helped our younger students on the course. Congratulations to Sam, Edie, Lailah, Rex, Darcy, and Rydah for taking first place. Congratulations to all of our Kinders who competed in their first Cross Country at Sheffield School. The HPE team has now calculated the scores from both our Primary and Secondary Cross Country.

In 1st place by only 4 points was Roland with 232 points. Congratulations, Roland!
NWPSSA Cross Country
On Tuesday, we took a very strong team of athletes to the Inter-Primary Cross Country at Ulverstone. This is a large event with a huge number of participants. Although there were many nerves at the start line, all our students competed to the best of their ability, and we are extremely proud of them not only for their race performance but also for their maturity and behavior as spectators.
A special mention to the Year 6 girls: Quinn (12th), Lauren (15th), and Indee (17th) all finished within the top 20 of their race. A huge achievement.
RYDA Day
On Wednesday 28 May the Year 10 students had the opportunity to attend the Rotary Youth Drive Awareness Day for the twelfth year. Members of various Rotary clubs statewide volunteer their time to present sessions designed to keep themselves, friends and family members safe behind the wheel.
Sessions included road rules, driving strategies with Tasmania police, crash investigation, driver observation and crash avoidance and an interview with a member of the public who had been involved in a near fatal crash. The group favourite was the speed and stopping station where students were given demonstrations of the car stopping distances at different speeds. We also witnessed the impact of speeding cars on mannequins, this was certainly an eye opener for the students.
The Sheffield School has been a strong supporter of this initiative since its inception twelve years ago. We constantly witness the impact on students of the messages conveyed by all presenters and cannot thank the volunteers from Rotary enough for their time and effort.
