Welcome to Term 4! We hope everyone had a lovely break and is now ready to embrace a term that is both busy and fun. We have a number of things to look forward to this term such as excursions, competitions, transitions, athletics carnival and assemblies.
My first two weeks at Sheffield School as Acting Principal has been thoroughly enjoyable; we have a wonderful, welcoming learning environment. On day one in our first staff meeting, I spoke to staff about the value of ‘belonging’ and how this is important to me. After two short weeks, I am pleased to say that I already feel like I belong to our school community. I have had numerous students and staff stop for a chat and check in with me, ask me questions about myself and one young fellow in Year 3 pops in each morning to say hello. I feel very lucky to be working with some wonderful young people and staff.
I would like to acknowledge and congratulate one of our staff members, Karyn Kleinman who this week celebrated her goal of being certified as a Highly Accomplished Teacher. This is an outstanding achievement, and we are lucky to have her at our school. Congratulations, Karyn.
On Wednesday I went along to part of an SRC meeting. The students spoke to me about their role of ‘creating connections’ within the school and the wider community. They shared with me some of the activities they have previously organised, and I was lucky enough to see them in action as they discussed, organised and worked together to create a plan for an up-coming event. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them.
Students have started PAT (Progressive Achievement Testing). PAT is required for all students Prep to 10 in Term 4. This data provides us with information about where students are at in their learning, the growth they have made and what gaps are in their learning which informs teachers with their future planning. Walking around the school, students have been engaged in both their testing and their learning.
This term we would like to welcome Tim who is our new school nurse. He will be working full time this year and then 0.5 next year. He has written a blurb in this newsletter to introduce himself to our school community.
This week we were lucky to have Montrose Bay Band visit our school and perform for our primary students as well as our high school music students. This was well received by all.
This term, Sheffield School will be hosting our JUNIOR CATTLE HANDLERS SHOW OF TASMANIA on Friday 8 November at the School Farm 1A High Street. Events start at 9am with our ‘Hoof & Hook’ Competition, followed by Beef Cattle Handling and Junior Judging. Some of the best young beef cattle handlers and junior judges from around the state will be competing, with quality cattle on display. The purpose of our show is to promote the agricultural industry in our community and to foster positive connections with our students and people who are passionate about agriculture in our region. Parents and guests are welcome to attend. The Kentish Lions Club will have their food van onsite for those who want to purchase food and drinks.

Futsal
Earlier this year Quinn (Year 5) represented Tasmania at the National Futsal Championship in Sydney.
This week, I had an opportunity to celebrate my long-term professional goal of being nationally certified as a Highly Accomplished Teacher with a ceremony with the Minister of Education. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate this with other fellow HALTs. I see exceptional teachers doing exceptional things every day, with so many of these outstanding teachers educating, inspiring, and supporting their students. The certification was a powerful professional development process that had a significant positive impact on my teaching practice.

Launching into Learning
HIVE Excursion
Last Thursday (17 October), all three 5/6 classes went on an excursion to The HIVE in Ulverstone to further explore the relationship between the Earth and the Sun. At The HIVE, the three classes rotated between watching a planetarium show, building solar powered vehicles and, the highlight of the day, building cars with different features and racing them. Overall, we had a great day and are excited to continue learning about the solar system.
PE Achievements
This week in PE, students competed in the 800m race, the first event of our athletic schedule. Special recognition goes to Hudson (Year 9) for achieving a new school record with an outstanding time of 2 minutes and 19 seconds.

Students from both Railton and Sheffield campuses of our school thoroughly enjoyed the music performed by Montrose Bay High School today.
