The last two weeks of Term Four have been extremely busy but also enjoyable as we have had so many opportunities to celebrate our students and their achievements at Sheffield School. I have felt proud as principal watching on as students received certificates and awards at the Presentation Day celebrations, performed their pieces at the Kinder – Year 6 celebrations, showcased their Art and Music talents, received awards for their cattle handling skills and presented themselves so maturely at the Year 10 formal evening. Our students should feel proud of their achievements and the effort they have given to their learning.
This year Sheffield School has been focusing on the value of connection; connecting students within the school as well as connecting our school further to both parents and our wonderful community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and community members for your continued support and your connection to us. We are truly partners in this journey and your support and belief in student potential has helped nurture their growth and success. As a school we will continue to focus on the value of connection. Regarding our values, it has been decided that next year, we will be adopting the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s (DECYP) values of connection, courage, growth, respect and responsibility. More will be shared about this next year.
As mentioned at our Presentation Day celebrations we will be losing four staff members Sarah Kisseleva, Clare Crowden, Lydia Rigby and Eden Gerke. We will be formally farewelling these staff on Friday, but I would like to say a big thank you to all four of these lovely ladies for their professionalism and care they have shown our school community. We wish them all the best as they begin the next chapter of their teaching journey. I would also like to thank all staff at Sheffield School for their dedication and tireless efforts ensuring we have high quality teaching and learning opportunities for our students. The last few weeks have been jam packed and I know both students and staff are ready for a well-earned break. Take the time to rest, enjoy the holiday with family and friends and be kind to others.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break and look forward to seeing everyone Term One, 2025.

The Mount Roland Folk Festival - Kentish Harp Combo
Sheffield School Students Isabella, Olivia and Lauren recently performed in the Sheffield Town Hall at the Mount Roland Folk Festival, as part of the Kentish Harp Combo group run by Kate Fraser. The performance was well attended and appreciated by the festival audience. Isabelle and Olivia both confident and performed beautifully after just 6 months of ensemble lessons. Lauren joined the group in the lead up to the festival, and performed as the narrator for the story which connected the harp tunes played. Lauren performed excellently in this role. Congratulations to Isabella, Olivia and Lauren for their performance.
The Kentish Harp Combo will be running some “Try a Harp” sessions in Sheffield during the week beginning 6 January 2025. This is to enable students to see if they might enjoy learning to play the harp and potentially join the KHC group on a regular basis. This will be for students aged 8-18. Please contact Kate Fraser 0412 322 729 to arrange a mutually convenient time if you have an interested student.
Year 6 Celebration
This afternoon we celebrated our Year 6 students. We had a wonderful lunch, some funny awards and shared some treasured memories! We all wish them luck as they transition to high school.
Food Studies Enterprise
The Food Studies students were given the challenge of working independently or collaboratively to run a profitable enterprise during Term 4. The students were asked to nominate a charity for any profits and the most successful team would receive a certificate and prize. We had four enterprise groups, and they trialled different recipes, planned for sales and advertising, anticipated risks and losses and produced a range of goods. The students were supported by Mr Dohse and Mrs Oldenhof, and I was very proud to hear the wonderful feedback from staff and students.
Kirra worked independently and produced delicious caramel mushrooms with home made pastry and presented delightfully. She was very well organised, donated $70 to the RSPCA and shared some of her thoughts about the experience.
“My enterprise experience was easy but also a hard amount of work and dedication. I had been waiting to be finished with it but then it also made me open my eyes about one thing and that is what if I could continue this trial, put myself out there and potentially make a profit, or own your own business?”
Ruby, Lillie, Amalie and Taylor overcame challenges with recipe trials and persevered producing well-presented impossible quiches. These were delivered to staff members, yielding $45 to be donated to the Red Cross.
Caitlin, Filly, Imogen and Lily worked extremely well, allocating roles and responsibilities and taking on board suggestions. With excellent organisation and planning they sold 36 serves of waffles with a variety of topping options and made $179 for the RSPCA.
The most successful group consisted of Bridie, Sapphire, Amanda and Lily who overcame and adapted to challenges well. One example was converting an unsuccessful fudge trial into a base for profitable milkshakes and truffles. They mastered the fudge recipes and banked an impressive $265 for the Just Cats Longford charity.
It is exciting we can provide real life learning with enterprise opportunities, and I am very grateful the students approached the challenges with enthusiasm and maturity. Thank you to staff, students and community members who supported their ventures and I’m sure we will hear more from these talented students in years to come.

Year 10 SRC
In Week 7 our Year 10 SRC held an ‘End of Spring Fling’ BBQ for students in Years 6-10. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t so ‘spring-like’ but it was still an enjoyable lunch. We would like to thank The Don Store and Bossimi’s Bakery for their generous donations. The money raised is going towards new games and activities for Tandara Aged Care.
Yr 7 - 10 Picnic
Year 7-10 students enjoyed their end of year picnic at Freer's Beach, Hawley today. The weather was perfect, the water was crystal clear and plenty of sand for beach activities. A fabulous way to spend the second last day of term.

Year 10 Christmas Craft

Netball
The Sheffield Netta team had a fantastic year. Individual skills growth during the season was pleasing to see, especially for some of the "older" players. Additionally they have increased their on court cohesiveness and teamwork, most importantly at this level they're having fun and are all happy to share playing positions and even fill in for the opposition if needed. Congrats to the whole team. Big thank you to Michelle Morley, Karli Hardwicke, Matt Flakemore and Ebony Rouse for all the game day management and coaching.

Year 5/6
The Year 5/6 team had another competitive roster and made it through to the semi-finals where they were beaten by the team that went on to win the grand final. The skills development of those who came along to training regularly was fantastic. There are some outstanding players in the team and it has been great to see them grow into their roles on court. Special mention needs to be made of Hailey and Myesha who both became regular members of the Year 7/8 team too, along with the occasional fill in Elise. Sincere thanks to Gemma Eastley for all her coaching, along with game day management (and coaching) by Kerryn Sherriff.

Our Sheffield Year 7/8 team have had an amazing finish to the year, winning the grand final in a close fought battle against Ulverstone who were at the top of the ladder. The team have shown great resilience throughout the season in the face of player shortages. For the second consecutive time, Ruby also took out the best and fairest award for the season. A big congrats and well done to all of you. Thanks to Carl Morley for his coaching and time.

HIVE
We are enjoying an excellent start to Summer here at Hive, including the opening of our new gallery exhibit, namanu rruni : Albatross Island, and our new feature show in the Planetarium, Planet Nine. With school holidays beginning next week, we have an exciting program of activities and workshops on offer. We are thrilled to be hosting Alex Paton as our scientist in residence. Growing up on the west coast of Tasmania, Alex’s passion for wildlife research was sparked by the unique and wild environment she was surrounded by. Alex has a background in marine ecology and has steadily transitioned to terrestrial biology. Alex Paton is presenting a series of free activities in Studio 1 alongside a STEAM workshop program including casting, solar cars, and screen printing.
