What's Happening

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

National Reconciliation Week is observed annually from 27 May to 3 June. During this time, Australians learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and explore how reconciliation can be achieved. This year our primary and secondary SRCs organised a whole school activity, where students were invited to create a hand to be placed in our ‘Sea of Hands’, in the shape of the Aboriginal flag. Each hand had Now More Than Ever written on them, the theme of this year’s Reconciliation Week.

We also enjoyed a very special Breakfast Club on Friday 31 May, with a focus on native Australian ingredients in honour of Reconciliation Week. Our 9/10 catering class, run by Mrs. Maddick and Mrs. Oldenhof, made Wild Basil Damper with Pepperberry Butter and Banana, Wattleseed and Chocolate Chip Muffins. We had a great turn out and the food was delicious!

WHAT'S COOKING?

Our Year 7/8 classes have been cooking dishes suitable for breakfast or brunches during term two. Students have been working on their presentation skills, as well as their food preparation and are making good progress. Hopefully, they will be practicing at home on the weekends and serving some tasty brunches to families.

The 9/10 Food Technology class are exploring foods suitable for special occasions and have tested recipes including beef stroganoff with rice, chicken strips with dipping sauce and chilled cheesecakes. They will demonstrate collaborative cooking when making canapes, entree and main courses.

Preservation techniques and associated skills are keeping the Food Studies students busy. After making tomato relish they used it in pizzas, scrolls and their own choice recipes. With increasing costs of ingredients, it is useful for students to experience the benefits of preserving foods.  These capable students also cater for the primary Golden Ticket recipients Principal's Afternoon tea, and secondary breakfast club. It’s wonderful we can provide them with catering opportunities, to hone their front of house and back of house skills.

We are fortunate to have continued support from Glenhaven and Kentish House to continue our Meals for Home program. Each week several students from Year 5 – 12 cook recipes that are suitable to freeze. The students cook a large recipe and then package half to freeze and half to enjoy or take home. Meals for Home has many benefits in that students’ experience cooking a ‘family’ size recipe, older students’ mentor younger students and the dishes benefit members of our community.

As we head into the wintery months the kitchen is a lovely warm place to be working, too. We have an increasing collection of indoor plants and with the walls of windows, it feels almost tropical. Outside the kitchen we have a large collection of photos of students and their dishes, from term one and two, displayed with our school values and mission statement. A small selection is included here, too.

STUDENT VOICE SESSIONS

Thursday 6 June two groups of students, secondary (Years 7-12) and primary (Years 4-6) participated in student voice sessions led by DECYP’s Child and Youth Wellbeing Team to gain further insight into ways to improve wellbeing and engagement in learning.  Individual students will not be identified when feedback is reported back to schools.  We would like to thank the students who volunteered to be part of the process to influence change.

SHEFFIELD SCHOOL SOCCER

We have 50 students representing our school each Saturday at Meercroft Park. We would like to congratulate our players on their effort in every game and thank our volunteer coaches for the work they do.

YEAR 9/10 TECH STUDIES

Students in Year 9-10 Tech Studies have just completed their first major project for the year, a short film entitled "Sorcery and Steel".

This film is based on a table top game created by Year 10 Dustin, who also wrote the script  and directed the film. Jaxon did the production, a very lengthy task!

Special mention must go to the main cast, Year 10s Dustin the Barbarian, Sir Joel the knight, Chloe the rogue and the mysterious Stirling, who play two roles, a bald wizard and a kangaroo, with outstanding vocal effects. The star of the show is Sheffield's own up and coming Hollywood sensation and Year 10 starlet Tayla, who plays a teacher greatly frustrated with her game-playing class.

This new blockbuster will premier at the Year 7-10 Assembly next week.
