Principal’s Report
Dear Parents,
We have reached the end of yet another busy term. Over the last few weeks we have held a number of assemblies, celebrating and recognising the efforts of many of our students as well as acknowledging the fantastic support of our school and local community. Two special mentions;
SRC greatest shave fundraiser - $4000 raised, one local business donated $1000, what a wonderfully generous community!
Railton Campus - Outdoor Learning Area made possible through funds donated by The Hub Inc.
Many of our students have also had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, such as excursions, camps, work exposure activities, and earlier this week the 3 day cattle handling breaking-in program. I would like to acknowledge the support of our staff and members of our wider school community in enabling many of the extracurricular activities to take place.

School Satisfaction Survey
Thank you to all parents who completed the School Satisfaction Survey recently, the feedback from this survey, as well the staff and student survey will assist to inform our priorities and planning going forward.
Staffing
Mrs Emma Dobson will be returning to Sheffield next term. Mrs Dobson will be teaching a year 9 and year 10 History / Work Studies class, an LAC class, a Sports Science class, IT, as well as supporting across a range of other classes and roles. Both Mrs Midson and Miss Eastburn will be reducing their teaching loads to 4 days a week.
Railton Campus Pool
In recent times we have had a number of phone calls regarding the Railton campus pool. Bookings for the upcoming pool season will be taken at the commencement of term 4. The pool season will commence Monday 13 November 2017, continuing through until Sunday 1 April 2018. This will be a 20 week season. The pricing structure for booking the pool from 2016/17 will be maintained this season. (Information attached).
Respectful Relationships Framework
The Tasmanian Department of Education maintains a whole-of-system, research based approach to developing and maintaining respectful relationships education. An essential element of the Tasmanian Government’s Safe Homes, Safe Families Action Plan has been the development of an extensive range of resources targeted at supporting schools, communities and individuals to understand why family violence occurs and how to reduce the occurrence of it.
At the centre of this initiative is an online and publicly available resource identifying strategies, processes and skills to guide schools and communities in the explicit teaching of respectful relationships. The resources are designed to support school communities’ model positive environments and appropriate behaviours in which individuals know, understand and engage in equitable and respectful relationships.
Respectful Relationships Education ensures that all Tasmanian communities value a culture of respect.
The main author of the documentation and Respectful Relationships workshops Janice Atkins will be running an information session for parents on the Respectful Relationships school program at our school on Tuesday 24 October commencing at 5pm in the Recreation and Related Arts Music Room. More information in the attached flyer.
Student Achievement
At the Sheffield Football Club end of year awards recently three of our year 10 students were acknowledged for their performance and effort this season, with Adam Norris winning the reserves encouragement award, Corey Foley the reserves most improved and Cameron Dunlop the senior encouragement award. Congratulations boys!
Abbey Boutcher is the Sheffield School Pierre De Coubertin Award recipient for 2017. To be nominated for this award the student needs to not only have excelled in an Olympic sport, which in Abbey’s case is rowing, but also consistently demonstrate and model the ethos of the Olympic Movement. As a part of this nomination Abbey was required to complete a written submission on Olympism and the Olympic Movement. Abbey will represent the school at the Academy Day on Friday 20 October, which is conducted by the Tasmanian Olympic Council. Congratulations Abbey.
Please have a safe and restful term break, ready for what will be a busy 4th term.

MasterShef 2017
During term three the year 9/10 cooking class have been extending their skills with weekly challenges. Students were given the design brief at the beginning of term and each week were required to source recipes, work within budgets, order their required ingredients and garnishes and produce a top class dish. The categories were Sensational Sangas (sandwiches), Pie Perfection, Sponge Cake, Delicious Desserts, Marvellous Mains and Chef Tribute. The finale was a two course pressure challenge. The theoretical knowledge of the students was also tested with class activities.
We were very appreciative of our willing judges who came along and taste tested each week. The students enjoyed the feedback and are now contributing their recipes to a folder which will be transformed into a recipe book. The MasterShef winner will be announced at our first assembly next term and will receive a $50 movie voucher. All of the competitors will receive a copy of the recipe book.

Samaritan’s Purse – Helping Kids in Need
This year during our History lessons, 8A and 8B have decided to work together to make gift boxes to send to children in Developing Countries. The students will sort the donations and buy gifts to put into separate gift boxes for boys and girls between the age groups of 2-4, 5-9 and 10-14. The boxes are passed onto the Samaritan’s Purse organisation, to sort and send over to a country in need.
Leading up to sending the gift boxes, we will be holding a casual clothes day and we will be taking around a jar of smarties for a whole week leading up to the casual clothes day, for students to bring a donation and guess the amount of smarties in the jar. The casual clothes day will be held on Friday 27 October to raise money for the Samaritans Purse Organisation. If students, parents or community members would like to donate suitable items to go into the gift boxes it would be greatly appreciated. Items can be delivered to the main office at both campuses no later than Friday 3 November.
Thankyou in advance.

Northern Schools Dressage and Show Jumping Competition
On the weekend of 16 and 17 September, the Tasmanian Pony and Riding club held its annual Northern Schools Dressage and Show Jumping competition. Sheffield School fielded three entrants in the event, namely: Sophie Richardson, Brooke Foster and Sharna Dolbey.
On the first day of competition the girls competed in the Dressage section of the event and achieved great individual and team results. Sophie Richardson placed first, whilst Sophie Richardson came runner-up and Brooke Foster an impressive sixth position. These outstanding results enabled the team to combine their scores and win the School Teams Dressage Trophy. Congratulations on an outstanding result!
On the second day of competition the show jumping was conducted and once again the girls competed in an enthusiastic manner, with Brooke placing sixth and fourth, whilst Sharna finished first and second in her categories.
Congratulations to the girls for a very successful weekend of equine sports.
