Principal Report

Dear Parents,

Although a very busy time of the year, it is an enjoyable time where we will celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of many students over the coming weeks during a number of special assemblies, functions and activities. It is also a time where students are able to relax and reflect on the year and spend time socially with other students and staff at the various excursions and picnics that will be occurring.

Information regarding some of these special events / activities will have been distributed through students either within letters or the newsletter; if you require any additional information or are unsure of details pertaining to your child's involvement in some of these events please contact the school office on 64918222 or speak with your child’s class teacher.

Athletics Carnival

Recently we held our annual athletics carnival. The emphasis of our tabloid structured carnival is on participation, and that was certainly observed on the day. Students across all grades were willing to have a go and do their best with the objective being to have fun and add to the point’s tally of their house. The winning house and secondary track and field champions was announced at yesterday’s 6-10 assembly. A full run down of the results is included in the newsletter.

Thank you to all staff for their support of the day, and particularly to our Health and Physical Education staff, Mr Hays, Mr Jacobs and Mrs Oosthuizen-De Lange for their organisation and preparation of students leading up to the carnival. Thank you also to Mrs Temple, Mr Wescombe and Mrs Woodiwiss and the SRC team for the barbecue lunch, and finally to Mr Von Stieglitz for the work behind the scenes in preparing the grounds and tracks.

Staffing for 2016

I hope to be able to provide some more information to our school community in regard to staffing for 2017 in our next newsletter, however I can confirm two appointments that have been made over the last two weeks; Mrs Sheree Lynch, who is currently the School Business Manager at Parklands High School, will take up the role of School Business Manager at Sheffield for term 1 of next year whilst Mrs Butcher takes some leave, and Mrs Kathy Turnbull has recently been reappointed as the Literacy Coach - Raising the Bar Assistant Principal for 2017. Congratulations to both Sheree and Kathy on their appointments.

Presentation Day Assembly

Tuesday 13 December parents and community members are invited to attend our Presentation Day Assembly. The assembly will commence at 11.30 am in the Recreation and Related Arts Building.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

An overcast, chilly morning this year greeted participants for the annual Sheffield School Athletics Carnival. Staff and students were treated to excellent ground conditions and finely presented ovals due to the hard work of groundsman Mr Von Stieglitz. In what was an exceptionally close finish, Don (3908) ran out victorious for the first time in eight years, narrowly defeating Kentish (3748) with Roland (3701) rounding out the top three. The participation rate among students was again very high this year and it was pleasing to see the majority competing in all events. The staff versus students relay proved once again to be very popular, with the students from Roland finally breaking the teacher’s stranglehold on the event. First time runner Mrs O showed her explosive ability in the third leg for the teachers, whilst prac teacher Mr Graham was unable to catch Pyper Page in the dying stages of the race. Congratulations to the Roland relay team for a fine victory. Congratulations must also go to Jayke Robertson who set a new record in the Grade 9 boys 800m event, great achievement Jayke.

A huge thank you to all staff who contributed to the smooth running of the day, especially Mrs Temple for her fantastic work in feeding the majority of competitors and also Gabrielle Brown who took time off from her holidays to support the carnival.

Grade 5 Japanese Class

In Japanese this term we have been learning about different foods and how to talk about what we eat, drink and like. A focus was looking at Japanese bento, or packed lunchboxes which can be bought by tourists as they pass through different areas. A challenge for the students was to come up with a bento to showcase the wonderful foods we grow and make on the North-West coast. We planned, drew and labelled our work, wrote sentences and presented our work in Japanese to the class. Here you can see some of the wonderful bento boxes designs.

Yoga

Our LiFT family yoga sessions which ran this term have been a wonderful way for parents and children to reconnect and discover some inner peace at what is always a really busy time. Participants have learnt skills to help manage stress and find balance. Our last session was held outside in perfect weather in a very beautiful part of our school playground. A big thank you to our instructor Sharlene Broughton from Haven Yoga and Meditation. Parents and children had many positive things to say about the value of these sessions.

If you missed out on this opportunity and/or would like to continue your family yoga experience, Sharlene would be excited to offer another family yoga course in 2017.

Please see the flier at the end of this newsletter and register your interest.

STAS 2017

The Student Assistance Scheme provides assistance for low income families towards the cost of school levies. Application forms are now available from the school office for families who are applying for STAS for the first time or who received STAS prior to 2016 but who did not apply for STAS in 2016 because of improved circumstances. Families who received STAS in 2016 have been sent letters regarding STAS 2017 directly from the Department.
