Sheffield School has been a hive of activity this term with engaging learning programs underway in classrooms and a wide range of extra-curricular experiences across our school. It is pleasing to see the high level of participation from our students in whole school events such as Cross Country, Reconciliation Week activities and the MND Big Freeze! These are just some of the opportunities that enable us to foster positive relationships and promote inclusivity in our school community.
Attendance
The cover page on your child's report will reflect their individual attendance to date. We are pleased to see 57% of students with 90% or better attendance to this point in the year, this is something to celebrate. However, we are always aiming to improve our overall attendance rate which currently sits at 84%.
Attending school every day gives your child every chance to develop the knowledge and social skills they will need to create a positive future. Good habits begin with routine, regular attendance to school where students can learn, have a diverse range of experiences, connect with peers and school staff to form positive relationships. When your child attends school every day, it helps them to:
- Keep up with the learning program, and not fall behind
- Access every opportunity provided and find interests
- Make friends and maintain friendships
- Feel a sense of accomplishment
- Have a brighter future
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.

Reporting to Parents
Mid-year reports for K-12 students will go home with students on Thursday 27 June, students in K-10 will receive student work samples (Evidence of Learning) either as printed copies or through Seesaw. Parent Teacher interviews will be taking place the following week on Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Kinder Parent Teacher interviews will be happening in week 8; information and a link to book parent teacher interviews for these dates is included in this newsletter.
Changes to Emergency Procedures
A number of changes have been made to our school's emergency procedures including our Lockout, Lockdown and Evacuation plans. DECYP have developed some department wide, consistent procedures with input from Tasmania Police. To initiate an emergency response such as a Lockdown there will be an announcement over our PA system. This announcement will be repeated three times, 'we are in a lockdown, I repeat we are in a lockdown'. It is likely the announcement will be heard in the town and it is important that parents do not panic and rush to the school. If there is an emergency procedure you will be notified following the event. There will be a practice lockdown in week 8 of this term, the announcement will state 'this is a practice lockdown'.
Student Free Day K-12
Moderation Day is this Friday 7 June. This provides dedicated time for teachers to moderate with colleagues from other schools. Our staff will be working across two sites, Port Sorell Primary School and Latrobe High School. At these meetings teachers will have the opportunity to share and compare student work samples to assist with consistency of assessments across our DECYP schools.
And finally, just a reminder that our Sheffield K-12 Assembly will take place next week, Wednesday 12 June at 1:30pm. Families are most welcome to join us!

PRIMARY CROSS COUNTRY
Our K-6 cross country carnival was held on Friday 17 May, and what a fantastic day it was. Although it was quite chilly, there was sunshine and our students were ready to go.
This term, students have been training hard in PE to get themselves ready for the big day.
Whether students had a goal of running the whole course or having a walk and talk with friends, it was great to see so many participants out on the course.
Our top four runners from each race were invited to the North-West carnival on 28 May.
Congratulations to our Year winners and runners up

SECONDARY CROSS COUNTRY
Sheffield School held its annual Cross Country Carnival recently at the school farm. The course included circumnavigating the many paddocks and obstacles. As in recent years, students had the opportunity to be “coloured” as they progressed around the course.
The first event of the day was the combined Year 7/8 race. Chloe showed that her extra training in netball and sport and recreation classes paid dividends as she crossed the line well ahead of Tamzin in second place and Emelia in third in the Year 7 girl’s event. The Year 8 girls saw Ruby, Mia and Hayley finish within a minute or so of each other in a very competitive race! Well done to Ruby on a tight victory. Congratulations to those girls who tackled the course and finished quite coloured and dirty.
Year 7 boys saw Wesley come home in first position ahead of the fast-finishing Kolbie. After some impressive performances in training, George picked up third position in a great performance. The Year 8 boys event proved to be the most participated in event of the day with 13 boys taking the starters orders. Jacob stormed home in first place, followed by Logan and Zavier. Special mention to Tyson for his efforts.
Year 9 and 10 girls events revealed many surprises - Bridie blitzed the field with an impressive run completing the course in 17 minutes in Year 9 girls. Obviously some secret training has been happening being completed on the Duff farm. Abigail , Lillie and Imogen rounded out the top four. In the Year 10 event Amanda and Hollie battled it out for supremacy, with Amanda taking the ribbon by 20 seconds. Cody, Fiona and Caitlin all received their ribbon only a couple of minutes behind.
Jack proved unstoppable in the Year 10 boys’ race, he comfortably defeated Jacob, with Stirling taking the bronze medal position. Year 9 boys saw Hudson capitalise on his recent intense training and power home for the win in the spectacular time of 13 minutes 39 seconds. Jack earned silver with Jett displaying huge improvement in his fitness to round out the top three.
The house results will be announced to students in the near future
Congratulations to all students who took up the challenge of completing the course and showing their best effort. The participation and behaviour of those on the course was first class.
PRINCIPALS AFTERNOON TEA
Congratulations to all the students who were invited to attend the Principal’s Afternoon Tea, in recognition for demonstrating our school values of Respect for Learning, Respect for Self and Respect for Others.
It is always a pleasure to acknowledge student achievement, but also to view the positive interactions and gratitude displayed.
DEVONPORT SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB
Congratulations to Cody on receiving the Mercer Bursary! The Mercer family has a long association with DSLSC, and this bursary is designed to help an athlete pursue their goals in surf sports. Well done, Cody!
NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK
National Reconciliation Week is observed annually from 27 May to 3 June. During this time, Australians learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and explore how reconciliation can be achieved. This year our primary and secondary SRCs organised a whole school activity, where students were invited to create a hand to be placed in our ‘Sea of Hands’, in the shape of the Aboriginal flag. Each hand had Now More Than Ever written on them, the theme of this year’s Reconciliation Week.
We also enjoyed a very special Breakfast Club on Friday 31 May, with a focus on native Australian ingredients in honour of Reconciliation Week. Our 9/10 catering class, run by Mrs. Maddick and Mrs. Oldenhof, made Wild Basil Damper with Pepperberry Butter and Banana, Wattleseed and Chocolate Chip Muffins. We had a great turn out and the food was delicious!

WHAT'S COOKING?
Our Year 7/8 classes have been cooking dishes suitable for breakfast or brunches during term two. Students have been working on their presentation skills, as well as their food preparation and are making good progress. Hopefully, they will be practicing at home on the weekends and serving some tasty brunches to families.
The 9/10 Food Technology class are exploring foods suitable for special occasions and have tested recipes including beef stroganoff with rice, chicken strips with dipping sauce and chilled cheesecakes. They will demonstrate collaborative cooking when making canapes, entree and main courses.
Preservation techniques and associated skills are keeping the Food Studies students busy. After making tomato relish they used it in pizzas, scrolls and their own choice recipes. With increasing costs of ingredients, it is useful for students to experience the benefits of preserving foods. These capable students also cater for the primary Golden Ticket recipients Principal's Afternoon tea, and secondary breakfast club. It’s wonderful we can provide them with catering opportunities, to hone their front of house and back of house skills.
We are fortunate to have continued support from Glenhaven and Kentish House to continue our Meals for Home program. Each week several students from Year 5 – 12 cook recipes that are suitable to freeze. The students cook a large recipe and then package half to freeze and half to enjoy or take home. Meals for Home has many benefits in that students’ experience cooking a ‘family’ size recipe, older students’ mentor younger students and the dishes benefit members of our community.
As we head into the wintery months the kitchen is a lovely warm place to be working, too. We have an increasing collection of indoor plants and with the walls of windows, it feels almost tropical. Outside the kitchen we have a large collection of photos of students and their dishes, from term one and two, displayed with our school values and mission statement. A small selection is included here, too.

YEAR 9/10 TECH STUDIES
Students in Year 9-10 Tech Studies have just completed their first major project for the year, a short film entitled "Sorcery and Steel".
This film is based on a table top game created by Year 10 Dustin, who also wrote the script and directed the film. Jaxon did the production, a very lengthy task!
Special mention must go to the main cast, Year 10s Dustin the Barbarian, Sir Joel the knight, Chloe the rogue and the mysterious Stirling, who play two roles, a bald wizard and a kangaroo, with outstanding vocal effects. The star of the show is Sheffield's own up and coming Hollywood sensation and Year 10 starlet Tayla, who plays a teacher greatly frustrated with her game-playing class.
This new blockbuster will premier at the Year 7-10 Assembly next week.
