Principal’s Report

Arts Celebration

The Arts Celebration Evening continues to be an entertaining evening and an opportunity for students to showcase their amazing talents to our community. Last night was no exception with a large audience attending the event and enjoying a fantastic event. A special thank you to Mrs Crowther and Mrs Holmes for coordinating this event, we appreciate the encouragement and support you provide our students. However, the biggest congratulation must go to our students who had the courage to perform and display their work for all to see, well done!

Presentation Day

Our Presentation Day Assembly is a time to reflect on the year and celebrate the learning and achievement of our students. I would like to extend an invitation to parents and the community to attend our Presentation Day Assembly on Tuesday 11 December beginning at 11:30am

Assembly Crew

A small group of students consisting of Nathan Smith, Ethan Duff, Triston Richardson and Josh Greenhill are responsible for setting up the Gym for our assemblies and performances. Understanding how to set up the audio-visual and sound equipment; and operate the equipment during events requires a lot of knowledge as well as the ability to work as a team. This is a huge responsibility, a big commitment and we really appreciate their effort.

Transition

Transition programs are well underway as we near completion for 2018 and begin preparation for next year. Year 7 Orientation Day and the Don College Start Day were held Tuesday. Our current Year 6 students including some new faces, experienced a day in high school. Our Year 10 students moving to Don College for the next phase of their education took part in the Start Day where they had a taste of their subject choices for 2019. Year 10s remaining at Sheffield in our Year 11 program also had the opportunity to begin their preparation for Year 11 with us. Railton Year 4 students will be visiting the main Sheffield Campus soon in preparation for the move to Year 5.

End of Year Reports

Student reports will be going home next Friday 14 December and this will provide you with an indication of your child's progress in the second half of the year. Regular attendance is critical for students to consistently increase their knowledge and understandings and achieve at their potential. Student attendance will be included in the report. Year 10 students completed their exams last week - the exam process contributes to end of year results and also provides valuable experience in preparation for, and sitting exams which will be good practice for as they enter post Year 10 study.

It is great to see our students continuing to achieve success in a wide variety of extra-curricular pursuits. Well done to Jack Crowther who was recently recognised as being the Most Outstanding Cadet of the Year in his Regional Army Cadets. It is always satisfying to see students following their interests.

School Crossing

Please remember to slow down as you approach the student crossing on Sheffield Main Street and ensure you stop to allow students across the street.

2018 Arts Concert

Art Exhibition

There was a tremendous turnout for the 2018 Arts Concert, which displayed a selection of work from across the school. The corridors were full of Art from both Railton and Sheffield, displaying the talents of students across the ages from Kindergarten to Year 10. The main display space was full of the students work, with examples from Manual Arts, Home Economics and the Art Departments. The Art students had chosen work to be entered into the school Art Acquisition prize, chosen by the public.

Musical/Vocal Performances

Last night’s Arts Concert was a huge success, all students have been working very hard and performed brilliantly. The evening was about showcasing our students’ vocal, dance and musicianship skills and seeing the development in their confidence with performing was inspiring. Well done to all, and thank you to the parents and families who came out to support the students’ evening.

A Focus on our School Values

Throughout the course of the year, we have consulted and worked with our students, staff and School Association committee to develop a matrix of our school values which outlines behavioural commitments from each of these groups. The final matrix is included below

Following this, teachers have been working in teams this term to develop a series of lessons, which will be delivered across the school throughout the term. This term, our focus is on Respect for Others.

Some of the work being completed in classrooms is featured below.

The 3/4 team have focused on valuing diversity and each class created a ‘We are all unique’ quilt. Every student had a piece of the quilt to draw and write about the unique talents and skills they bring to the classroom.

Students also used a Venn diagram to compare themselves with a partner: How are they alike? How are they different?

Tayla and Maddison – “We both have blonde hair.”
Maddison – “I have a twin brother.”
Tayla – “I’m allergic to cats.”
Jed and Amanda – “We both ride motorbikes.”
Jed – “I have a scar on my finger.”
Amanda – “I am half Canadian, half Australian.”
Finley and Roland – “We both make the same noise when thinking.”
Roland – “I can dislocate my thumb.”
Finley – “I was born at home.”

The 9/10 team have focused on considering others’ opinions and feelings.

The success criteria for this lesson included:

  • I can identify a range of emotions and verbalise them
  • I can understand how emotions impact on others
  • I can form an opinion
  • I acknowledge that opinions can change with more discussion or information
  • I can accept other opinions and challenge my own assumptions

Callum Heyward and Andy Enright (Year 10) contribute to a class brainstorm activity designed to recognise emotions and expand emotional literacy.

Year 9 student responses show they can apply their learning to examples from their own lives. Students applying the concept to their own context helps understanding.

The Prep/1/2 team are focusing on giving and receiving compliments. Students from 1/2R are creating a Compliment Tree. Students are being encouraged to give genuine compliments to each other. As compliments are shared, the giver will have the opportunity to add a leaf to our class tree.

Sephina-Jo French and Sharni McCormack (Year 2) creating leaves to add to our class Compliment Tree.

Celebration Assembly

Our Celebration Assembly will be held on Wednesday 19 December in the Gym. The assembly will commence at 9:30am and will conclude just before recess at 10:50. Families are more than welcome to attend to share in celebrating our students. We look forward to seeing you.

Inter –High Athletics Carnival

On Monday 3 December a team of over 50 Sheffield Athletes travelled to the Dial Regional Athletics Centre in Penguin to contest the NWHSSA Inter-high B Division Athletics Championships.

It was a wet and windy day that challenged our athletes throughout the day. There were 96 events in all with some individuals competing in more than 8 separate events. Every athlete on the team competed with great sportsmanship and tried their best in all of their events.

We had some stand out performers on the day with Joven Gyemore dominant in the Year 8 boys 100m, 200m and 400m. Evan Laing showed he has a bright future in the sport of distance running with some very strong performances in the 800m and 1500m winning both comfortably. All our Year 7 girls put on a fantastic performance in their events placing highly in almost every event.

Elijah Steers won 3 separate individual events and showed he was the genuine all-rounder with wins in field events and competing well in his track events. Cliff Rule, Andy Enright and Alex Diprose gave it their all in every event they contested and were rewarded with great placings.

A special mention needs to go to team members who stepped up in other’s absence: Lillian Rockliff competed in as many events as possible to get points for the school despite being the only Year 8 girl from the school to attend. Kasey Woods and Breona Roetz did everything they could to ensure Sheffield were represented in events where we were short. The Relays finished off the day, which always provides excitement. We were competitive in most with a stand out being the Year 8 4 x 100m Boys Relay (Patrick and Hayden Sims, Evan Laing and “the Rocket” Joven Gyemore) they won by at least 30m! At the end of the day overall Sheffield School was in 3rd position behind Smithton High School and Circular Head Christian School.

It was a great day, thank you to all the Students for being a part of the team in 2018.

We would like to thank the teachers on the day Mr Hays, Mr Penney, Mr Barber and Mrs Cross for all their support and encouragement throughout the whole day. For those that didn’t make the team this year train hard and lets go two spots better in 2019.
