Principal’s Report
It has certainly been a very busy end to term 2, the half way mark for the school year!
Thank you to all of the parents/carers who have taken the opportunity over the past week to strengthen the partnership between school and home and participated in the ‘celebration of student learning’ sessions.
In response to the 2017 feedback we received regarding our reports, we made changes to the 2018 reporting format. We would like to hear from parents/guardians again; how did we do? Please follow the below link to a short survey, which should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

Staffing
There are a number of changes to staffing for term 3; Mr Ben Humphrey, Mr Callan Morse and Miss Jessica Eastburn will all complete their fixed term contracts at the end of term; we would like to thank Ben, Callan and Jess for the contributions they have made to their respective learning areas during their time at Sheffield and wish them well in their future endeavours.
Mr Tony Hays will be returning from leave teaching HPE; Mrs Jane Holmes will replace Miss Eastburn teaching Art; Mr Ben Wilden will join our staff and will be teaching a range of classes in the secondary Science and Technology areas, and a number of our current staff will be changing or extending their current teaching roles/loads to support the learning programs across the Year 7 and 8 classes.
In addition to these changes, earlier this week we farewelled Mrs Christine Grant, who has been performing the role of Numeracy Specialist Teacher in our school for the past 3 years. Mrs Grant has provided over 40 years of exemplary, dedicated service to the department; we wish her well in retirement. Mr Chris Nock, who is quite familiar with our school, has been appointed to the Numeracy Specialist Teacher role for the remainder of the year.
Mr David Cox, our Farm Manger for the past 3 years will be taking up a new position at the end of his current contract. Mr Cox has provided exceptional service to the school farm and has led significant improvements across all aspects of the operation. We are currently working through a selection process to replace Mr Cox and will advise our school community of the outcome next term. We wish Mr Cox well in his new role and look forward to his continued involvement in supporting the further growth of the farm, through mentoring and engagement on the farm committee.
NextGen Team Business Challenge
I would like to mention the achievements of a contigent of Year 8, 9, and 10 students who participated in the NextGen Team Business Challenge held in Burnie recently. This was the third time the Sheffield School has participated in this event, with two teams representing our school in 2018. Our teams were particularly successful with team ‘Blackfish and Chippery’ (Amber Chatterton, Kaleb Patterson, Denver Puccetti, Bethany Cobbin and Lochie Ford) winning Best Marketing Package; and Tassie Tiger Bites (Billie Chatterton, Alysha Mulholland, Oscar Downing and Laura Ashby) winning Best Business Plan and Marketing, Best Pitch Deck Presentation and Runner Up for the Best Overall Business. A tremendous achievement! I would particularly like to thank Mr Ashby who coordinated our students’ participation in the event as well as all of the parents for their support of their child’s involvement.
Finally, well done to all students for the commitment demonstrated towards their learning over the first half of the year. Please take heed of the feedback provided in your reports and come back term 3 refreshed and ready to work hard towards achieving your learning goals for the remainder of the year!
A reminder to parents that term 3 commences on Tuesday 24 July. (Monday 23 July is a staff Professional Learning Day)

State Primary All Schools Cross Country
The Symmons Plains cross country event is one of the biggest events in Tasmania with over 2500 students converging on the raceway in Launceston to contest the Tasmanian Primary All Schools Cross Country Championships. Most of the schools in Tasmania were represented by their cross country runners at all levels of ability. With some of the races having over 350 starters it was certainly an amazing sight to see so many students enjoying the challenge of the Symmons Plains course.
47 Sheffield Primary Students from Years 3-6, Mr Penney, Mr Bakes and Mrs Ritter made the long trip to Symmons Plains in Launceston on Tuesday 26 June. We had full teams in all 4 year levels for both boys and girls. We had some really strong runners who welcomed the opportunity to test themselves against the very best runners in Tasmania.
It was an awesome day with ideal running conditions for all the races and everyone competed with great sportsmanship.
We had good performances across all the races with the highlight being the amazing run of Hollie Diprose in the 10 year old girl’s race finishing in 24th place in Tasmania in a race that contained 310 runners. Congratulations Hollie what a run!

Tasmanian Secondary All Schools Cross Country Championships
On Tuesday 3 July a team of 12 travelled to Symmons Plains Raceway to compete in the Tasmanian Secondary All schools Cross Country Championships. The students had to battle a tough course and challenging conditions with recent inclement weather making it muddy in parts. It was a cold, windy day which made it difficult to stay warm before and after races. With the best runners in Tasmania there representing their respective schools, the small Sheffield team relished the opportunity to challenge themselves against the best. The races ranged from 3-6 km in distance for the respective age groups with most of the runners finishing mid field. The most promising run of the day came from Riley Richardson-Hume (Year 8) who pushed hard the entire race and was rewarded with a top 30-40 finish. Not far behind him in the same race Evan Laing also made it within the first 50 finishers. Also the performance of Cliff Rule in the under 16 race suggests he has a future in the sport if he chooses. Official results will be released shortly, keep checking the link below. The students did the school proud with their efforts and their representation of Sheffield School.

Year 3/4 Crowden – Local Government
This term in 3/4 Crowden, we have been learning about the role of the local government and the decisions it makes on behalf of our community. Mrs Kate Haberle joined us for our excursion and shared her knowledge with us about council services, how decisions are made and plans for the future. We also discussed what skills people need to work for our local government. We are excited to share some photos of our recent visit to the Kentish Council.
Kentish Council Recount by Mackenzie Duraj
On Thursday 24 May, our class visited the Kentish Council with Councillor Mrs Haberle to learn about our local government.
When we arrived at the Kentish Council we had a look at their working space. We went to the meeting room where council have their debates and then sat down. A staff member called Sonia came in to talk to us about dog control. If you have a dog you should get it registered because if it is lost the council can then give it back to you. We learnt about the levels of government. We had a go at naming some people that were in the Labor and Liberal government including Malcom Turnbull and our Mayor Don Thwaites. After this, we watched a mock council meeting that was created by Mrs Haberle. Some of our class mates played the roles of local councillors. I thought this was really fun because I learnt what the councillors do when they are having a debate. I learnt that when it is their turn to speak, they need to say “Through the chair Mr Mayor”.
When it was time to leave, we had a photo outside the Kentish Council. I learnt lots of things about our local government and what they do for our community. The Council do many things like build new parks, bike tracks and collect our garbage.
