Principal’s Report

Department of Education Values

During 2017 the Department of Education worked through a process to determine the future strategic direction for the whole of agency for the next 4 years, 2018-2021. As a part of that process there was significant consultation at all levels regarding the commitment, values, goals, priorities and improvement strategies that would guide us all over that period of time. In this newsletter I would like to focus on the values which will inform all of our actions.

The Department’s new values are:

Aspiration

– a culture of high expectations
and high achievement

Growth

– improving by always learning
and finding better ways to do things

Courage

– accepting challenges
and embracing opportunities

Respect

– respecting ourselves, others,
our past and our environment

Aspiration

– a culture of high expectations and high achievement

Growth

– improving by always learning and finding better ways to do things

Courage

– accepting challenges and embracing opportunities

Respect

– respecting ourselves, others, our past and our environment

You will notice these values on things like our certificates and other forms of documentation and correspondence supported by the Department. I am sure you will see the strong links and connections between the DoE values and our new school values:

Respect for self - living with purpose, being passionate, caring about self, owning actions and choices, having self-efficacy
Respect for others- valuing diversity, making ethical choices, working collaboratively, considering others’ opinions and feelings
Respect for learning - holding high expectations, creative thinking, goal setting, persisting, maximising opportunities

As a school we are currently working on the development of a matrix that will inform the actions of students, staff and the community that will support each of our values. We are also working through a process to develop visual representations for our values much like those included in this newsletter developed by the department to depict the whole of agency values.

Biggest Morning Tea

Congratulations to Mrs Skirving and Mrs Brown and all of the other adult and student helpers who worked together to conduct our ‘Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea’ here at the school recently. They raised in excess of $1000, an amazing effort, for a terrific cause.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Sharna Dolbey and Sophie Richardson who have been selected to represent Tasmania in the National Interschool Equestrian Championships being held at Werribee, Victoria in early October. Well done and good luck at the championships girls!

Cambodia Fundraiser

The Cambodia Team are holding a fundraiser to help achieve their chosen goal of $5000 - this money will be donated to the Samrong Children’s Farm – the team are staying there for 4 nights. This is a farm where children of Cambodia live to be educated in not only English and Maths but also developing the skills in growing crops and livestock which will then be passed on to their families for future sustainability.

If you, or a family member, are fans of The Incredibles then grab a ticket or two, or three and join us on OPENING NIGHT for THE INCREDIBLES 2!

Tickets are available from both school offices.

Purchase an Entertainment Book from the Sheffield School Office (either book or digital version) for $65, part of the purchase price will be donated to the Cambodia Fundraiser.

Cross Country (Kinder – Year 4)

On Friday 25 May Sheffield held its first Kinder-Year 4 Cross Country day. After weeks of practice in PE lessons with Mr Penney and Mrs van Tienen the students were ready. With students encouraged to wear their sporting house colours it was a great spectacle to see the 3 houses of the Blue Bolters from Roland, the Red Rockets from Kentish and the Yellow Flames from Don.

The program kicked off with an old fashioned cheer with the teams getting into the spirit by letting Sheffield know they were ready to run.

The course provided lots of challenges for the students with hay bales and logs courtesy of the Sheffield farm for them to get over as they made their way around the course. It was great to see teachers getting involved and having a run with eye catching performances from Mrs Thomas, Miss Crowden, Mrs Ritter and the big striding Mr Allen from Railton Campus. A special thanks to Mr Taylor (Railton Campus) who only 5 days earlier ran a marathon (42.2 km in 2 hrs 38 mins) for acting as a lead runner. It was an amazing day with music pumping. All the races were hotly contested with tremendous effort from all students.

Cross Country (Years 5 – 10)

On Wednesday 23 May our 5-10 Cross Country was held at the School Farm. With the students having spent plenty of time in PE leading up to the carnival working on their fitness levels, it was expected that participation would be high and some great times would be achieved.

The weather on the day while windy, did not deter the enthusiasm of the runners. The course was a relatively challenging one, which altered in distance depending on year group. The course was 2km for year 5/6 students and 3.5km for 7/8 students and 9/10 students.

Overall, the participation on the day was good, with many smiling faces on the descent to the finish line. The day could not go ahead without the work of staff on the day and sports leaders from year 9/10 supporting around the course directing and supporting our runners.

Cuppa for Cancer: Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

On Thursday 24 May, the Year 9/10 Hospitality class held a ‘Biggest Morning Tea’ for the staff at both Sheffield and Railton campuses. Our aim was to raise $200 to donate to the Cancer Council by selling pre-ordered plates of morning tea and offering produce for sale on a trade table. We far exceeded our expectations, the generous staff at both campuses helped us take more than $1000! The students worked very hard and greatly improved their presentation skills whilst cooking for the event. A special thank you to Michelle Temple, Tammy Huett, Christine Grant and Sheree Rodman for going above and beyond to help us organise and run such a successful event.

Fruit Fly Biosecurity Information

The Sheffield School including the Railton campus, is within the formally declared Control Zone. A map and more detailed information for schools is attached.

What this means for Sheffield School:

Whole fruit grown in backyards within the control zone should not be taken from these sites, therefore this produce should not be taken to school. However, home grown fruit can be cut up into fruit salad and taken to school.

Fruit from outside the control zone can be bought to school but cannot be taken back outside this control zone.

Fruit disposal - there are bins provided at each sector of the school for disposal of all fruit and waste that comes onto site.

This will be double bagged and disposed of correctly.

Primary State Athletic Carnival

On Friday 18 May Mackenzie Duraj, Mr Penney, and Miss Brown travelled with over 50 of the North West's best track and field athletes to the 2018 PSST Primary State Athletic Carnival at St Leonards in Launceston. In the Year 4 Girls 100m she ran brilliantly and qualified for the final where she finished fifth, so she can say she is the fifth fastest year 4 girl in Tasmania!  she then competed in the 200m final, coming fifth. To finish off the day Mackenzie had the job of anchoring the 4x100m relay for the North West Year 4 Girls Team who ran brilliantly to finish second in Tasmania. The best news of all was still to come with the North West team winning the overall title which they last did back in 2012.

Well done Mackenzie!

Student Career Choices

Information for parents is highly sought after when it comes to helping their children with their career choices. For that reason the Department of Education has developed an Assist your child feature page containing links to the articles that provide tips and advice to assist your child with their career development.

Student Learning - Years 3 / 4

This term in 3/4 Thomas, 3/4 Crowden & 3/4 Laws Mainwaring, we have been using peer feedback as a strategy to enhance student learning. We are pleased to share some information about the benefits of this strategy and some examples of student conversations below.

What is peer feedback?

Peer feedback involves students giving and receiving information about performance or understanding in relation to learning intentions and success criteria.

Why peer feedback?

  • Encourages collaborative learning and can build and enhance students’ capacity for judgement.
  • Students are able to detect errors and provide suggestions for improvement when processes are scaffolded and structured questions or rubrics are used.
  • Helps students become teachers of themselves and each other, and to self-regulate their learning.
  • Plays a role in establishing where students are in their learning and how they can reach their desired learning goals.
  • Can increase student achievement.
