Principal’s Report

Dear Parents,

We are now over half way through the term, with a busy calendar ahead in the weeks to come! The first report for the year is scheduled to be sent home with students today. This initial report will indicate to parents and carers how well students have started the year. The front cover page also includes attendance information for your child, the year group, and the school and state/sector average. Please take the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their class teacher at any time during the school year by making an appointment through the school office on 6491 8222.

National Day against Bullying and Violence

Tomorrow is the federally promoted National Day against Bullying and Violence. As a school we are constantly working toward the goal of ensuring all student feel comfortable and safe at school. This year a focus will be to work with our school community to embed our new school values of Respect for Self, Respect for Others, and Respect for Learning, ultimately the more of our school community who are living these values through their actions, the closer we will be towards achieving our goal.

It is also worth noting as there is often some confusion, that there is a difference between a one off conflict that may occur between two students, compared to bullying and harassment which is a targeted and repeated action, physically, verbally or cyber against another student.

As you may be aware cyberbullying is rapidly becoming the most prominent type of bullying and harassment occurring in society today, I have included some information that may be useful for parents and students in regards to combatting such bullying. Bullying and harassment is a societal problem that we all need to work together to eradicate.

Year 7 Camp

Last week our year 7s spent 3 days and 2 nights on camp at Paton Park. The program was packed with many activities aimed to develop and challenge both individual and team skills. The abseiling was again a favourite for many of the students, as well as the opportunity to ride through the tracks of Paton Park on mountain bikes which certainly proved an exhilarating experience. Students also enjoyed a range of activities along the Ulverstone foreshore both on day 1 and 3, with the Ulverstone Water Slide being a highlight for many, especially given the warm weather. Thank you to Miss Hampton and Mr Morse for their organisation and commitment to ensuring the success of this camp. Thank you also to Mr Humphrey, Mrs Rayner and Mrs Maddick for their support and attendance at the camp.

Student Representative Council

Late last year, students from years 6, 7, 8 and 9 voted to decide on the composition of the 2018 year 10 Student Representative Council. Students elected were Billie Chatterton, Chloe Currie, Samantha Denby, Catie Loane, Alysha Mulholland, Takisha Norris, Breona Roetz and Kasey Woods. Recently I met with the group to discuss the year ahead as well as the importance and influence of their position within our school community. The students made a commitment to adhere to the high expectations required of the role and signed the SRC pledge. Congratulations to all of these students, we look forward to the fantastic contribution each member will make to our school this year.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Lillian Rockliff who performed well at the All Schools Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington recently. Lillian finished on the podium in the U/14 Single Scull B Event Final, partnering a girl from Taroona High School.

Fruit Fly Biosecurity Information

The Sheffield School including the Railton campus, is within the formally declared Control Zone. A map and more detailed information for schools is attached.

What this means for Sheffield School:

Whole fruit grown in backyards within the control zone should not be taken from these sites, therefore this produce should not be taken to school. However, home grown fruit can be cut up into fruit salad and taken to school.

Fruit from outside the control zone can be bought to school but cannot be taken back outside this control zone.

Fruit disposal - there are bins provided at each sector of the school for disposal of all fruit and waste that comes onto site.

This will be double bagged and disposed of correctly.

Railton Mosaic Project

During the last week of term 4 2017, all students from the Railton Campus spent time working with artist in residence Christianne Goss. This was part of the campus Bucketfilling Celebrations.

The idea was to transform the two large garden pots situated near the flag poles, by putting mosaics on them. Initially the grade 3/4 students brainstormed ideas. The decision was made to fit in with the town's theme of topiary and create topiaries to put on the pots. We were very lucky to have Christianne Goss come and work with our students. She was very knowledgeable in the area of mosaics and worked with students to create the mosaics on large pieces of paper.

When we returned this year, Mr Brad Taylor, our groundsman spent time gluing these onto the pots and grouting them. The result is some very creative, colourful and interesting pieces of artwork.

Well done to all staff and students who completed this project.

School Bus Timetables

Some school bus timetables and routes changed at the start of the 2018 school year.

To assist parents and students, the Department of State Growth has launched a new dedicated webpage with detailed information on the changes.

http://www.transport.tas.gov.au/project2018/changes_to_school_bus_routes_and_timetables_for_2018

The website lists all changes by region and school, and interactive maps showing the revised routes and timetables for the services that have been affected, together with contact details for the relevant operator if parents want to confirm any details.

School Canteen

Please note that due to regulations regarding the sale of fruit we will not be selling fruit (whole) or fruit salad until advised that it is safe to do so.

School Nurse

There has been a suspected case of chickenpox in our school last week. If your child has not had chickenpox before it is possible that he/she will catch it. If they have been immunised it is unlikely but still possible to get a milder version of it.

Sheffield School Association

The School Association gives parents, guardians, community members, students and staff an opportunity to participate in setting future directions for the school, making decisions and developing policies that ensure our students engage in a high quality of education. This year we have five vacancies for parent/guardians and two for the community positions. Parent and guardians of a student are automatically parent members and are entitled to nominate for a parent position and to vote should an election be required. Being a member of the School Association is a worthwhile and effective way to be involved in the school community and to ensure that we provide an education for our students that will foster in them a desire for life-long learning.

Meetings will take place once a term on a Tuesday night at 7.00pm in the Year 11/12 Room.

If you would like to nominate for a position on the Sheffield School Association please complete the form below and return to Sheree Rodman, Returning Officer at Sheffield School. sheffield@education.tas.gov.au by Tuesday 20 March 2018.

If election of any positions are required, they will occur on Thursday 22 March 2018.

The AGM and General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 27 March 2018.
