Principal’s Report

Staff and students have returned to school refreshed, ready for the term ahead. The start to the term has been very positive, albeit quite chilly and wet, with students settling back into their learning programs really well. I would ask parents to ensure despite the cooler weather that their child/ren are wearing their school uniform, if there is a need for extra layers a thermal/ t-shirt underneath the school shirt would be preferable than non-school uniform hoodies and jackets.

Reporting Survey

In response to the 2017 feedback we received regarding our reports, we made changes to the 2018 reporting format. We would like to hear from parents/guardians again; how did we do? Please follow the below link to complete this short survey, which should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

Dairy Australia Milk Quality Award

Each year Dairy Australia recognises the lowest 5% of farms across Australia based on annual average bulk milk cell count (BMCC). Low BMCC indicates high quality milk which impacts positively on the income from milk for the farm, so understandably this has been a focus of our Farm Manager David Cox, during his time at Sheffield. His efforts have certainly paid off, with Sheffield School Farm receiving a Milk Quality Award for 2018. Congratulations David!

Staffing

Recently Miss Kayla Hampton and Mr Grant Penney were announced as the successful applicants for the substantive middle school and HPE positions respectively, advertised last term. We would like to congratulate both Kayla and Grant and look forward to the contributions they will make to our school going forward. In addition to these appointments Mr Derek Sands will replace Mr David Cox as our Farm Manager, Derek possesses a wealth of knowledge and industry experience and is looking forward to continuing the great progress that has been made at the farm in recent years.

School Values

Over the course of the last few months we have been working through a design process to develop a visual representation for each of our new school values, these are displayed below. These visual representations will be utilised on posters, banners, certificates and other materials featuring our values. Hopefully you can see how each design represents the essence of the value; ‘respect for learning’ features the book, children and growth; ‘respect for others’ is represented in the linked hands at the forefront of the globe; ‘respect for self’ is a little more obscure, with a figure of a person centre to the design, with a flower around it to show care and compassion and the rainbow like figure representing living with purpose and hope.

Chess

The school chess team (Ethan Duff, Denver Puccetti, Nathan Smith, Josh Greenhill, Triston Richardson, and Damon Sing) attended the second regional Chess Kids tournament for schools in the NW yesterday at Somerset Primary School. They competed in the secondary division against two teams from Marist College and one team from St Brendan Shaw and were the only secondary public school representative. Everyone performed exceptionally and Nathan consistently won his games and has shown excellent improvement. The team placed third by a single point and achieved enough points to qualify for the Tasmanian state finals to be held later in the year! We have another regional event to attend in Ulverstone before the state finals which will give us some much needed match preparation.

SRC REPORT

Last term the Student Representative Council were flat out organising things around our school. One of these fun events included the socials. On Wednesday 27 June we held the secondary social, with the theme of Superheroes Vs. Villains, raising a total of $190. The following day, we had a full on afternoon hosting two more, the ECE and primary, with a different theme of All Things Animals. Together these two socials raised a total of $694.30, with a standout crowd attending - the primary social alone raised a massive $587.50. Thanks to everyone who attended and we hope to soon see the effects of the fundraising throughout our school.

On 27 June Year 10 SRC headed off to Burnie for the day to attend the second session of Learn To Lead. This was another great opportunity to develop more leadership skills, with the main focus of the day being teamwork.

Last Friday we held Crazy Hair Day throughout the entire school and tomorrow Friday 3 August, we have Jeans for Genes Day costing a gold coin donation.

For the first time on Thursday 16 August, the SRC are holding their very own RSPCA Cupcake Day. This will give the opportunity for students to buy a chocolate or vanilla cupcake, made by the hospitality class with animal decorated designs, to raise money for the RSPCA. Which will then be personally delivered to them by the SRC team.

Student Career Choices

Information for parents is highly sought after when it comes to helping their children with their career choices. For that reason the Department of Education has developed an Assist your child feature page containing links to the articles that provide tips and advice to assist your child with their career development.
