Principal’s Report
Dear Parents,
School Show
This year we were again fortunate with the weather, with the show proceeding in good conditions, our students performed very well, experiencing success in both cattle handling and junior judging competitions.
Congratulations to all of our students that prepared cattle and competed on the day. We had many individual class winners in handling competitions, continuing the success from recent shows across the state.
Thank you to all of our sponsors, judges and volunteers for making our School Show so successful. A particular thank you to Mr Skirving, Mr Barber, Steph McNab and the Show Committee for their tireless work leading up to the event.
Detailed results are included in this newsletter.

Athletics Carnival
Last Friday we held our annual athletics carnival, with 77% of our student population attending and participating enthusiastically in the day. Students across all years were willing to have a go and do their best with the objective being to have fun and add to the point’s tally of their house. The winning house and secondary track and field champions will be announced at an assembly later in the term.
Thank you to all staff for their support of the day, and particularly to our Health and Physical Education staff, Mr Hays, Mrs van Tienen and Miss Langmaid for their organisation and preparation of students leading up to the carnival and to Mr Von Stieglitz for the work behind the scenes in preparing the grounds and tracks.
Presentation Day Assembly
Tuesday 12 December parents and community members are invited to attend our Presentation Day Assembly. The assembly will commence at 11.30 am in the Recreation and Related Arts Building.
Student Achievements
Last Tuesday afternoon the NAPLAN Celebration Event was hosted by the Learning Services Northern Region held at the Penguin District School. At this event Lillian Rockliff was recognised for achieving in the top 1% of NAPLAN results as well as the top result in NAPLAN testing for the Sheffield School. Congratulations Lillian!
Congratulations to Ethan Tirant who continues to build on previous successes within the boxing ring by winning the Male Rising Star award at the IGA/The Advocate Junior Sport Awards recently. Ethan has a terrific future ahead in the sport with his next target being to put himself in a position to qualify for the 2020 Youth Commonwealth Games.

Railton Canteen
At Railton we are lucky to have a canteen that operates every Tuesday. This is completely run by a group of wonderful volunteers, who we would like to thank for all the work they do to ensure this service happens at our school. With some of our volunteers finishing this year (as their children move to the Sheffield Campus) we are looking forward to inviting new people to help in this area. It could be that you help out weekly or only every couple of weeks. If you can help out as a canteen volunteer in 2018 please see the office at Railton, Miss Pearce or Mrs Last.
We offer Breakfast Club every morning. This provides students with toast or a warm milo to give them energy for the day. We are able to offer this due to volunteers. If you are able to help out in 2018, either one day a week or fortnightly please contact us.
As with all volunteers at schools, you will require a Working with Vulnerable People Card. Staff at the office can assist you completing the online application if needed.
Railton Kindergarten 2018
We will be conducting two orientation session at the Railton Campus, for those students who will be attending Kindergarten at Railton in 2018. These will be held in the Kindergarten/Prep room between 12.00-12.30pm on Thursday, 30 November and Thursday, 7 December. New students will have the opportunity to meet the current Kindergarten students and familiarise themselves with the environment. On Thursday, 7 December parents will be invited to attend an Information Session about the start of Kindergarten. This will be held during LiL (between 11.30 - 12.00) and followed by the orientation session in the Kindergarten room. We look forward to seeing people at these sessions!

Asbestos Awareness Month
NOvember is National Asbestos Awareness Month. Australian homeowners, renovators, tradies and handymen need to ‘Get to kNOw Asbestos this NOvember’ by visiting asbestosawareness.com.au to learn how to protect themselves, families and co-workers from exposure to dangerous asbestos fibres.
Many wrongly believe ONLY fibro homes contain asbestos. Asbestos products can be found in ANY Australian home built or renovated before 1987, even brick, weatherboard and clad homes.
Lurking in garages, kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, walls, eaves, fences and under wall and floor coverings: it could be anywhere! Don’t play renovation roulette!
When it comes to asbestos, Go Slow! Asbestos - it’s a NO GO!

Defence Force Recruiting
It has been a busy couple of months for Defence Force Recruiting – Hobart with hundreds of applicants interviewing for their dream jobs in the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
In September we ran the Australian Defence Force Careers Expo that had well over 3500 attendees and featured many different pieces of equipment and ADF staff members. It was truly a pleasure to host so many different schools and all the students that attended were excellent.
YOU SESSIONS
YOU Sessions are filling up for the rest of the year, if your child is keen to get their application started before the end of the year we highly encourage them to call 13 19 01 and book in.
