Principal’s Report
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to term 4, with a very busy and full calendar ahead!
Education Act Update
Over the past term and a half, we have been working to update our policies in line with the staged roll out of the new Education Act (2016).
During term 3, a working party consisting of members of the School Association reviewed the model constitution provided by the Department of Education. This working party carefully reviewed the model document and considered the Sheffield School context and our previous constitution to make a small number of alterations and additions. Our proposed Constitution has been sent to Legal Services and we are currently waiting for this to be approved. I will provide further information regarding this and what it means for families and students, once we have received approval to proceed from Legal Services.
Our attendance policy and procedures are also currently being reviewed. There will be some changes to current processes and expectations and further details will be shared in the next newsletter.
Professional Learning Day
A reminder to parents that next Friday, 3 November as determined by the Minister is a Professional Learning Day (students do not attend). Staff will be working across a range of areas over the course of the day, with a strong focus on moderating student work to ensure consistency in assessment leading into the end of year reporting process. The day will also provide an opportunity for staff to meet to further progress work on a number of school based priorities.
Respectful Relationships Curriculum Parent and Community Session
Thank you to those school community members that attended the Respectful Relationships Curriculum session conducted by Janice Atkin (Principal Author of the Respectful Relationships Curriculum Package) and Anthony Crawford (Principal Education Officer – Curriculum Services). The session was an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Respectful Relationships Curriculum, how it is structured, the focus areas and some of the associated resources. The underpinning concept of the curriculum framework is ‘Respect’, with our future work around unpacking our new school values of Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Respect for Learning to be complemented by this new curriculum package. Below is a link to the PowerPoint presented at the session and links to the curriculum package.

Proposed Bus Route Changes for 2018 (Paradise /Lower Beulah)
The Department of State Growth as a part of the recontracting process have been reviewing the existing bus services across the state. In our context we have recently had notification that they are proposing a merger of the Paradise and Lower Beulah routes. A letter from Andrew Kruup, Department of State Growth will be posted out to parents of children that currently utilise this service. If you have not received this by early next week please contact the school to receive a copy. Andrew is seeking any feedback from parents regarding this proposed change, before making a final decision on the service.
Kentish Rowing Club
Recently I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the new Kentish Rowing Club. There is a significant amount of effort that goes into starting a new club and I would like to congratulate the committee members who have made this happen. The club will provide a complete pathway in rowing from juniors through to senior level competition, and have the capacity to train locally which given we have the Lake Barrington International Rowing Course at our backdoor makes perfect sense. Congratulations again to everyone that has been involved with this exciting development. Pictured are some of our rowers with the Club’s Patron, Drew Ginn.
Sheffield School Show
The Sheffield School Cattle Handlers show season is underway and the team have been busy preparing, parading and judging cattle at the Burnie, Launceston and Hobart Shows. A gallery of images are included.
On Friday 10 November Sheffield School will be hosting our annual Junior Cattle Handlers Show of Tasmania at the School Farm. This event will showcase the skills of our own cattle handling team as well as students from around the state including students from Scottsdale High School and Yolla District High. The Show will begin at 8am with the popular Hoof & Hook competition where the beef cattle will be judged on the hoof. The junior handling competitions will begin from 10:15am. Lachlan James will travel from NSW to judge the beef cattle events assisted by our past students Bronte and Pyper Page, and Ian Hortle from Moriarty will be overseeing the dairy cattle events.

Tasmanian Black Dog Ride
Next Thursday morning we will welcome members of the Tasmanian Black Dog Ride to our school. The aim of the Black Dog Ride across the country is promoting awareness of mental health, depression and suicide prevention. This year their fundraising efforts will be directed to support 500 defence and emergency service personnel to complete the Mental Health First Aid course, with the hope that this will increase within communities the capacity to identify and respond appropriately to those in crisis requiring support. The members of the Black Dog Ride will be at school from 8.30am, located on the Primary courts; parents and students can take a look at their bikes and converse with them prior to school commencing.
Student Achievement
Congratulations to Ebony Sims who has been selected in the State Under 16 Girls Futsal Team. She will be competing at the nationals in Sydney in early January. Well done Ebony!
Recently one of our past students achieved significant success at the Royal Melbourne Show, Pyper Page won the National Final in the handlers competition; a great achievement!

2018 Classes
Staff will soon begin the process for creating class groups for 2018. A number of considerations are taken into account to create classes and a number of hours are dedicated to ensuring classes are equitable. Once classes have been created teachers are allocated a class, therefore requests for individual teachers cannot be made.
Parents are invited to discuss any educational concerns or important information they may have for their child with the senior teacher in charge of their child’s current area of the school. Whilst all requests will be considered there is no guarantee that it will be possible to grant them.

Crazy Hair Day/Sheffield’s Greatest Shave
Crazy Hair Day was an astounding success this year and received lots of positive feedback. Many students from Kindergarten to Year 10 came to school with their hair done in a crazy way to fundraise in support of the Children’s Cancer Foundation. Everyone looked like they were having lots of fun!
Crazy Hair Day also incorporated the Sheffield’s Greatest Shave assembly where two students and four teachers gave up their hair in support of the fundraising effort. James Currie and Nathan Huett both had their hair cut off by students during recess time and then shaved at the beginning of the assembly, before focus turned towards the teachers. The fun was boosted with Mr Bakes’ promise to shave if the fundraising efforts were to raise $2500.

The SRC would like to thank all who participated and donated to the cause, including a very generous donation from a local business. In total, $4000 was raised and passed on to the Children’s Cancer Foundation from all of the fundraising efforts during the term.
With thanks from the SRC.

There is no cost for this program.
We will provide all the information you need for the enrolment process, uniforms, lunch boxes and the routines of Kindergarten. Please spread the word.
*Railton Pre-Kinder will run during LiL each Thursday at 11:30-12:30 in Terms 3 and 4.

Samaritan’s Purse – Helping Kids in Need
This year during our History lessons, 8A and 8B have decided to work together to make gift boxes to send to children in Developing Countries. The students will sort the donations and buy gifts to put into separate gift boxes for boys and girls between the age groups of 2-4, 5-9 and 10-14. The boxes are passed onto the Samaritan’s Purse organisation, to sort and send over to a country in need.
Leading up to sending the gift boxes, we will be holding a casual clothes day and we will be taking around a jar of smarties for a whole week leading up to the casual clothes day, for students to bring a donation and guess the amount of smarties in the jar. The casual clothes day will be held on Friday 27 October to raise money for the Samaritans Purse Organisation. If students, parents or community members would like to donate suitable items to go into the gift boxes it would be greatly appreciated. Items can be delivered to the main office at both campuses no later than Friday 3 November.
Thankyou in advance.
