Principal’s Report
BOOK WEEK ASSEMBLY
Last Thursday we held our annual book week assembly. This is one of only a few opportunities where we come together as a whole school. The day was a great spectacle with many staff and students dressing up as one of their favourite book or movie characters. Of course, apart from the enjoyment of dressing up the assembly coincides each year with the National Literacy and Numeracy week and is about promoting the importance of these areas in each and every one of our lives. Mr Bakes also coordinated the book fair over this week, which helps to promote an enjoyment for books and reading amongst our younger students. I do hope that all of our students who looked fantastic in their dress up remembered to thank their parents for organising their costumes! Finally, I would like to thank all of those who attended and contributed to our assembly.
A power point featuring many staff and students in their costumes is included in this newsletter.
SCHOOL MISSION, VISION and VALUES
At last week’s School Association meeting the new school mission, vision and values were tabled. This is the culmination of collaboration and input by staff, students and school association representatives over the first part of the year. We now look forward to reviewing and updating our school charter which provides the direction for our school, as well as commencing a process to embed the new values within our everyday actions.
Term dates and Professional Learning days for 2018
In 2018, three additional professional learning days and one moderation day have been granted by the Minister to enable principals and teachers to build capacity in curriculum implementation, assessment and reporting. These days are;
- Tuesday 6 February
- Monday 23 July
- Friday 2 November
In 2018, the Moderation Day will be held on Friday 13 April (the last day of Term 1).
REPORTING SURVEY
Just a reminder regarding our reporting survey. We are looking to improve the way we report student progress to our parent community, and would appreciate feedback by completing this short survey to inform our review of this process.

Family Maths
We had a fantastic response to Family Maths with over 40 entries from our K-2 area at Sheffield and K-4 at Railton. Thank you to all of the families who put in time and effort to allow their children to earn a prize by working together on some fun maths tasks. It has been great to hear that the placemat prizes have been generating some maths talk in homes.
Premiers Reading Challenge
Well done to all of the K-6 students who entered the Premiers Reading Challenge! We had an increase this year of students who completed the challenge. Certificates are on their way!
Have You Got A Great Idea?
Tell us what activities or events you’d like to see happen in our school. Write it down and place it the LiFT suggestion box in the Flying Start room at Sheffield and the office at Railton, or you can email us: carly.sullivan@education.tas.gov.au
Board Game Library
A reminder that board games are to be returned every Tuesday at Sheffield and Railton on Thursdays with all of their bits.
Snap a photo of your family using a board game and send it in for your chance to feature in the newsletter. Email photos to carly.sullivan@education.tas.gov.au
Mental Health Week (8 – 14 October 2017)
Sheffield’s Greatest Shave
On 15 September there will be a whole school assembly starting at 11.30am. One of the main reasons for this assembly is that four teachers and two students will be having their heads shaved. If students or staff want to be involved they can have the opportunity to snip a pony tail off one of the participants for $5. If the total fundraising effort climbs to $2500, Mr Marcus Bakes will also be having his head shaved, but only if we raise the $2500!! Currently we have $1000 and we are certain that with the support of our students and families that we can make it to our goal of $2500 so that we can make a very substantial donation to the CHILDREN’S CANCER FOUNDATION.
