Principal’s Report
Dear Parents,
Excursions
Over the term to date a number of our classes/groups of students have participated in off campus activities to support their learning programs and future pathways. Each of these excursions provide authentic and real life example of their learning focus and certainly support our school motto of providing ‘mountains of opportunity’. I have listed some of these activities below and included a selection of photos. The process for organising an excursion is quite extensive so I would like to acknowledge and thank staff for supporting these opportunities for students.
3/4 classes excursion to Don River Railway and
Tiagarra

Students also participated in the community events of Walk Safely to School and the Kentish Council celebration for National Reconciliation Week. Guests from YFCC and Ben Milbourne worked with students in year 8 to look at healthy minds and bodies.
Sheffield School Information Communication Technology (ICT) Policy 2017
At a recent council meeting the new ICT policy was adopted, this policy is the result of the collective work of students and staff, and will guide our actions in relation to the use of both personal and school owned devices in our school. The main premise of the policy is that ICTs should enhance, not interrupt learning.
Henry St Bus Drop Off Zone 8.30 – 8.50
In recent times we have noticed more parents dropping their children off in the area directly adjacent to the main student entrance in Henry St, this area needs to be left free for our contract buses to pull in to drop students off. When we have parents dropping students off in this area and buses arriving it causes congestion and there is potential for an accident and impact on student safety. I would appreciate it if parents are able to drop their children at other areas along Henry St or via the ECE carpark loop and leave this space clear for our buses. Thank you for cooperation with this matter.
School Health Nurse Program
The recent 2017/18 State Budget held some positive news for our school with the inclusion of an allocation for the extension of the school health nurse program into district schools. This program will be implemented into our school later this year, with initial communications indicating a 0.5 FTE allocation to our school. The main role of the school health nurse is to provide a service that supports the Health and Wellbeing of our school community, which may include vision and hearing screening, developmental checks, health promotion activities, education, brief interventions and referrals to appropriate support services. As further information is provided about this program I will share this with our school community.
Chaplaincy
Last Wednesday evening we held our Chaplaincy Celebration Event. This was a great opportunity to recognise the work Esther does in our school and wider community. We were treated to a number of musical and drama performances by Ethan and Jacob East, and Adam Kemp and Olivia Taylor. During the evening we heard from a number of guest speakers who highlighted the importance of Chaplaincy in our school. Esther is an integral member of our pastoral care team and continues to impact positively on many of our students at Sheffield. Thank you Esther!
Student Achievement
I was recently informed that Noah Hinrichsen has been successful in winning both the Tasmanian State Championship and Tasmanian State Open Championship, and has now been selected in the Tasmanian Karate team to compete at the National Championships in Sydney in August. Congratulations Noah!

Breakfast Club
Cross Country
On Friday 19 May, Sheffield School students participated in the in Sheffield School Cross Country event held at the school farm. Competing on undoubtedly the most picturesque course on the North West Coast, students had the opportunity to take in the views of Mt Roland whilst churning out the kilometres.
Year 5/6 students competed first up and found the 2.8 km both challenging and enjoyable to complete. Secondary students filled the time slots after recess and lunchtime and it was great to see the majority of the secondary school lining up to participate in this event. Tight racing was witnessed as combined year 7/8 and year 9/10 races ensured full fields and the opportunity to display their best effort.
Fastest time for the day in the girls divisions was Eliza Keen in 17m 39s and for the boys Zane Richardson completed the course in a blistering 13m 51s. As well as providing an event for students to compete, it was also an opportunity for Leading Active Community and Year 11 students to display both their leadership and organisational skills. Students from this learning area actively helped design the course, marshal check points and record all results. They did a magnificent job and should be congratulated on their efforts.

Science Excursion – Leven Canyon
On Thursday 1 June 2017, all of year 9 were taken on a field trip to Leven Canyon to reinforce work done in their Science classes on forestry and forest management. The field trip is coordinated by the Forestry Education Unit in Hobart and hosted by Forestry Education Unit (FEU) staff. The students participated in ecological surveys of the surrounding bushland to measure the physical features of the ecosystems as well as studying the natural and geological history of the area. The FEU staff were impressed with how well the students worked in the field and everyone had a great time. It was very cold but the students were well prepared for the cold and hardly noticed the icicles growing from their noses.
SRC Report
The SRC have had an amazing Term 2 so far and have engaged in many community projects as well as some fun school activities. As of two weeks ago, the SRC have reinstated the Tidy Classrooms Respect initiative. This is a program that encourages high-school students around the school to treat their classrooms with respect and tidy up their environment after they use it. The cleaner will then mark each class and give an overall score. The winning class each week gets an awesome prize which helps encourage the students to do better with their cleaning. On 2 June, the SRC went down to the park in Sheffield to help with the Reconciliation Celebration. We had students from Prep right up to Year 6 participating in the fun, and it was lots of fun for the SRC being able to go down and hang out with some of our younger students. On 31 May, the SRC came along to the annual Chaplaincy dinner in Sheffield. It was very informative and the great food made for a great night.
Coming up we have some events like Couch Potato Day on Monday 3 July and the Social on Thursday 22 June 2017. On Couch Potato Day, students will be allowed to come to school in their laziest clothes and buy a baked potato. Some of the younger students will look forward to fun events on the day including Chuck the Spud, Sack Races, and Hot Potato. With the first social of the year coming up, the SRC have been preparing for a fun and entertaining afternoon for all. This term’s theme for our Early Childhood and Primary students will be What I Want to Be When I Grow Up – we’ll be expecting some awesome costumes from these kids! The theme for the secondary students is Glitz and Glam, so we encourage all students to come along with their best glittery costumes and join in the night of exhilarating dancing and awesome games. Over the next few months the SRC will be doing some fundraising for the Children’s Cancer Foundation. We’ll be holding a range of activities including shaving our heads to raise awareness. That’s all for this month so stay tuned for more exciting news to come from our school’s SRC!
