Principal’s Report

Dear Parents,

Staffing

Last newsletter I updated our school community on staffing changes for term 2. Since that time there have been a number of other staffing developments; Mrs Emma Dobson was successful in her application for the role of Acting Northern Manager, My Education 7-12 and will be in this role for at least the remainder of this term. I have also been able to recruit an Art teacher to cover the Visual Art classes. As a result of these developments there will be a number of changes that will impact many of the secondary classes. Mrs Caitlin Midson will continue to teach the 8-10 Hospitality class and will also teach the majority of Mrs Dobson’s 9/10 History and Work Studies classes, as well as supporting work placement organisation; Miss Jessica Eastburn will join us from Latrobe High School and will be teaching the Visual Art classes, some grade 8 Core classes and a grade 9 History class. Mrs Cindy Skirving will join us for the remainder of this term to teach some of the Food Technology classes. Ms Kris Carmody will continue to teach the 6/7 Drama class. As a result of these changes some of the timetables for the secondary grades have needed to be reshuffled. We are working to ensure sufficient opportunity for staff to transition into their new roles so there is minimal impact on student learning. If any parents have any questions or concerns regarding these changes please contact me.

Cross Country

Last Friday we held our cross country event at the school farm. It was a terrific day with many students participating and enjoying the run around the farm. The organisation and running of the event was supported by Leading Active Communities classes, our 11/12 students and HPE staff. These students along with the HPE staff and many other adult helpers manned checkpoints and encouraged students to complete the course ranging from 2.8km for the year 5s and 6s through to 3.4km for the secondary students. The event also provided an opportunity for HPE staff to select students to represent the school at upcoming inter-high and inter-primary cross country events. Well done to all participants for their efforts on the day and to all that contributed to the organisation, particularly our HPE staff, and our farm manager Mr Cox.

MUNA

Last weekend a group of Sheffield School students participated in the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) at Deloraine. MUNA simulates a meeting of the United Nations, and allows students to learn about diplomacy, international relations, public speaking, and critical and creative thinking.

Abbey Boutcher and Nathan Huett represented Brazil, whilst Balin Puccetti and Artyom Keddie represented Italy. All students are to be commended on the extensive research and preparation they undertook in the weeks leading up to the event. They should be proud of the mature and respectful manner in which they conducted themselves all weekend. This was a fantastic event, and would not have been possible without the Rotary Club of East Devonport, who generously sponsored our teams. Thank you to Tammy Huett, who sourced and created the wonderfully authentic national costumes for each team.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Yesterday, students from both campuses across our school participated in National Simultaneous Storytime. This annual campaign, now in its 17th year, aims to encourage young Australians to read and enjoy books. The campaign selects an Australian children's book each year and involves people from across Australia reading the same book at the same time! The book this year was The Cow That Tripped over the Moon by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood.

Mayor Don Thwaites was the special guest reader for the Sheffield based students and I had the pleasure of reading to the Prep-2 students at the Railton campus. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all children and attending families.
