Principal Report
Dear Parents,
Over the last couple of weeks our students have had the opportunity to showcase their talents and personal qualities through a number of significant events. These events were a terrific advertisement for the Sheffield School within the wider community. Thank you to all that contributed to the success of each event.
Remembrance Day Service
Last Friday we held our Remembrance Day Service. Students, staff, members of the Sheffield RSL Sub Branch and the public were in attendance. Senior students Ranni Lockett and Cyan Peace did an excellent job conducting the service.
Mr Jim Austin, Sheffield RSL Sub Branch Vice President, delivered the Remembrance Day address and led the school through the Ode, a minutes silence and Rouse. Mr Austin spoke of the sacrifice made by the many service men and women both in the First World War and other conflicts and peace keeping missions since, in order for us to live the life we do today. He also spoke encouragingly of the strong bond between the school and the RSL Sub Branch.
Charley Davies paid tribute to the memory of our brave service people by reading a poem written by past student Michael Dunn titled 'Son of a Hero'. Our school rock band lead by vocalist Jacob East, with instrumentals by Manisha Kernan, Jaicam Kenzie and Daniel Smith performed a lovely musical tribute titled 'Can you Hear Australia's Heroes Marching?', which was very well received by the staff, students and community members assembled.
Students' representing each section of the school presented wreathes in respect of those service people that have lost their lives in wars and peace keeping missions.
Early Childhood - Tayla Winwood
and Caitlin Rayner
Primary - Ruby Skirving and Emma Spillman
Secondary - Gabi Jago and Dean Jennings
At our Railton Campus a service was held, with Zayna Mulholland and Abbey Boutcher, two of our senior students leading the proceeding, with the whole campus also observing a period of silence to remember those servicemen and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifice in wars and peacekeeping missions. Poems written and read by Nehamiah French, Toby Henricks, Riley Gaylor, Kaitlyn Ash, Sorka Lee and Kai Hicks were also features of the service. The Ode was read by Ella Taylor with the wreath laid by Joey Richardson and Hunntah Barker.
Thank you to all those students for contributing to this important school and community event.
School Show
This year we were again fortunate that the weather held off and the show proceeded in good conditions. Our students performed extremely well throughout our School Show, experiencing success in both cattle handling and junior judging competitions.
Congratulations to all of our students who prepared cattle and competed on the day. We had many individual class winners in handling competitions, continuing the success from recent shows across the State.
Thank you to all of our sponsors, judges and volunteers for making our School Show so successful, with a particular thank you to Mr Barber, Mr Skirving, the Show Committee and our administration staff, particularly Steph McNab for their tireless work leading up to the event.
A detailed report with results are included in this newsletter.

NAPLAN Celebration Event
Last Thursday afternoon the NAPLAN Celebration Event was hosted by the Learning Services Northern Region held at the Penguin District School. At this event both Bonnie Sullivan and Balin Puccetti were recognised for achieving in the top 1% of NAPLAN results for 2016, Balin was also recognised for being the top result in NAPLAN testing for the Sheffield School. Congratulations both Bonnie and Balin!
Reminders
Before School Supervision of Students
A reminder to parents that staff do not commence before school duty until 8.30am, therefore there is no direct supervision of students arriving early. Where possible, we would encourage students not to arrive before 8.30am.
Students leaving school during the day.
Recently we have had a number of secondary students leaving school without following the appropriate protocols. These protocols are in place to ensure we are able to meet our Duty of Care obligations and are also able to account for all students in the case of a fire evacuation or some other type of emergency situation. Parents please reinforce the following steps with your children.
- Students need to have a dated and signed note from their parent /carer explaining why they will need to leave school.
- Students need to have this note signed by their class teacher and a senior member of staff.
- Prior to leaving the student needs to present at the administration area and provide the signed note to the administration staff and sign out.
- If the student returns to school that day he /she will need to sign back in at the administration area.
- Students are to leave and arrive via the main student entrance not the front entrance to the administration area, unless with their parent /carer.
- In the event that something unexpected occurs during the day and a parent /carer needs to provide permission for their child to leave school this can be done by phoning the school and speaking with administrative staff on 64918222.
Thank you for your cooperation with these matters.

SCIENCE
This year Sheffield School was lucky enough to get a much needed upgrade to our Science labs. The new labs are very welcoming and provide a comfortable and exciting learning environment for students to use. Miss Dudley and the Advanced Studies class have been busy this term hosting a variety of younger classes and teaching and mentoring them in some exciting Science lessons.
So far we have had Grade 2 Moore join us to learn about butterfly life cycles, growing seeds and the sugar content of popular drinks. Kinder learned all about the water cycle and why we need water, Grade 3 Hinrichsen discovered some exciting chemical reactions and we look forward in the coming weeks to seeing many more classes. It has been very interesting and gratifying to watch the older and younger students working so well together and exploring parts of the school that they may not usually have had access to. The younger students have all enjoyed the experience and the older students have enjoyed teaching them some new skills and scientific knowledge.

Year 11 and 12 at Sheffield
A number of students and parents have expressed an interest in continuing study at Sheffield School into Years 11 and 12. Course preparation and selection is occurring now, and it is very important if you have any questions about enrolment in 11 and 12 at Sheffield to contact the program's coordinator, Bob Ashby, at soon as possible. He can be reached by phone on 6491 8222, by email at bob.ashby@education.tas.gov.au, or by stopping in and making an appointment at the office to speak with him. Parents of students who have expressed an interest in enrolling in Sheffield's Year 11 and 12 program should have received a letter in the mail. Please fill out the last page with your child and have your child return this to Mr Ashby.

Asthma and Anaphylaxis Schools Program
Important news for parents about the Asthma &
Anaphylaxis
Schools Program
Students with asthma – no matter how mild
If your child has asthma – even if it is quite mild – please let us know if you haven't already.
We require an up to date written Asthma Action Plan completed by the students Doctor.
We just completed training with the Asthma Foundation of Tasmania. They told us that there is no way of predicting if a student may suddenly have a major flare up, even if it has not happened before.
So please let us know so we can fulfil our duty of care and keep an eye on them.
Students with anaphylaxis
Please make sure that we have your child's most recent Anaphylaxis Action Plan.
The plan that we are referring to is the one that has the patient's photo attached and signed off by a doctor.
According to ASCIA, Australia's authority on anaphylaxis, the plans should be renewed by your doctor at least once a year.
Any questions on asthma or anaphylaxis
If you have any queries, talk to the Asthma Foundation of Tasmania, the organisers of the Schools Program, by visiting the link below or calling 1800 278 462.
