It has been wonderful to have the opportunity this week during our Open Classrooms, at our Assembly, and now through this edition of our newsletter to reflect on the experiences, growth and achievement of our students this term. Students have continued to amaze us with their talents, individual interests, and willingness to have a go. Thank you to our staff, families and our volunteers who all contribute to the success of our school.
Staffing changes
Thank you to Jason Dohse and Sharyn Clake who have been teaching English and HASS in our secondary sector this term. We appreciate their willingness to take up these teaching positions at short notice. Sharyn will focus on her PHD while Jason will continue to do some relief work with us. We welcome Miss Eden Gerke back to our team following some time away travelling. Miss Gerke will be teaching 7-8A IT, 7-8B and 9-10A English and HASS in term 4. Congratulations to another of our past students Destiny Reynders who recently won the substantive EFA position working at our Early Childhood campus.
After 17 years of teaching at Sheffield School, it’s time for me to say goodbye as I embark on a new challenge in Primary Industries Education with TasTAFE. As I depart my role as Acting Principal of Sheffield School, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the entire school community. It has been an absolute privilege to lead and work alongside such dedicated staff, enthusiastic students, and supportive families. Together, we have achieved so much, and I leave knowing that the school is in excellent hands, ready for continued success. I will forever cherish my time here and look forward to seeing what the future brings for our amazing Sheffield School. Thank you to everyone in our school community who has supported me, and I know you will show the same support to my replacement Ms Wendy Leonard when she takes up the role of Acting Principal in term 4.

Sheep Handling and Judging
Congratulations to Imogen for her recent success at the Bendigo Elite Show and Sale in Victoria. Imogen is becoming an accomplished sheep handler and junior judge, winning both the Junior Handling and Junior Judging events at this prestigious show. This is another example of a Sheffield student achieving success in their chosen pursuit, well done Imogen!
Devonport Strikers
Congratulations to Kolbie for winning the Devonport Strikers U14 coaches awards.
Year 7/8 Camp
During week 8 of Term 3, Year 7-8 Students packed their bags and headed to Camp Clayton, Turners Beach for two nights.
In the weeks prior, the cohort were put in to ‘tribes’ and the pre-camp preparation began. We created tribe flags (which were to be with our tribe at all times), tribe slogans and considered the positive qualities we could bring to our tribe. Once we arrived at camp our Tribe challenges and outdoor activities started. Teams headed off to the Team Rescue challenge, The Giant Swing, The High Ropes and The Zipline.
After dinner (we seemed to be eating all the time…Camp Clayton caters well) we completed our camp journals, put our trivia knowledge to the test, played cards and finally a game of spotlight.
After some of us witnessing the beautiful beach sunrise we were ready for day two. The Year 10 SRC joined us today and led beach activities – word scrambles, beach flags, and beach volleyball. Beach flags got very competitive!
Day three saw us up and about early again…some a little worse for wear after the amount of sugar consumed from the auction purchases, lack of sleep and sore bodies. After packing up, cleaning our cabins and having breakfast we were off to the beach for a huge team scavenger hunt. Our activities ended with a walk along the bike track to the Turners Beach Berry Patch where we were able to buy ourselves one of their delicious berry ice-creams.
The 7-8 year group would like to thank Mrs Bransden, Mr Holland, Miss Stolp, and Mrs Sherriff for all of their work prior to the camp and for enjoying the full two nights with us as well as the other members of staff who were lucky enough to come and spend time with us and be a part of our camp experience. It was lovely to spend time with each other outside of the classroom. We would also like to thank The Hub who generously donated a substantial amount of money which contributed to allowing us all the opportunity to participate in this school event.

Year 11 & 12
Nathan:
I’ve learnt a few things this year. The best would have to be navigating the mess of social life amongst other people in school. And the best thing I’ve done is doing what I can to attend school, to show up on time, to be in a place I feel like I belong.
My time at school is amazing, as it should be.
Morgan:
In relativity year 11/12, unlike lower years, is simpler. The best thing in my opinion would be work placement as part of my Certificate II in Community Services. For my chosen interest I chose Teacher’s Aide training, which is something I thoroughly enjoy. I find it fun being around children, learning their likes and dislikes the personality of their character and just teaching them. Which is why in my opinion, that is the best part of my year so far.
Makeisha:
I liked when I watched The Man From Snowy River in English and Focus on Children, because I’m learning a lot. And I like doing art because I can be myself.
Mitzi:
This year I’ve learnt how to use and construct syntax trees for my Digital Projects class. Also learning how to classify and label each part of a sentence, so it can be made into said syntax tree. (Student commented: “It get’s easier, the more you cry…”)
Early Childhood School Farm Visit
Sheffield Early Childhood and Railton campus students enjoyed a visit to our school farm during week 9 of this term. Students were thrilled to encounter many different parts of the farm. Some highlights were petting the calves with Mrs Rigby, meeting merino show sheep, and experiencing a dairy tour with Mr Barber. Students were so engaged and eager to learn as much as they could about dairy farming. When students were not outdoors exploring, they were provided with opportunities to play and engage in farm-based activities in our classroom space. Mrs Wivell kindly brought in her milk separator which proved to be a huge hit amongst students. We used fresh milk from our school dairy to see how we could make cream and butter.
A big thank you to all adults that made this day possible, and our farm staff for volunteering their time to share their knowledge with our students.
Some thoughts from our students…
The strawberry milk was delicious. Mia-Louise
I learned how we get milk from our cows and how loud the dairy cleaner is. Winston
I had to be really careful with the baby cows because they were only 1-4 weeks old. Chevae
My favourite bit of the whole farm visit was seeing the baby calves and finding out how the cows get milked from the old dairy to the new dairy. The new dairy has a lot more machines. I also liked the views from the classrooms. Vienna
I learned that dairy calves get separated from their mums at an early age. Shanaya
My highlight was being able to pat and love the baby cows. Also, being able to see the cows walk into the dairy. Isabelle
Fire Education
Firefighter Craig and Firefighter Aaron spent a week with our Sheffield and Railton students in Week 8.
Aboriginal Education
Our Aboriginal Educator Gill Brazendale has connected with each of our K-6 classes at our Sheffield and Railton Campuses. She has shared the story We Love Country showing puppets, clap sticks and creating masks with the K-2 classes and for the 3-6 students a lesson on Welcome to Country/Acknowledgement of Country was provided.
Gill is currently working with Aboriginal students (years 3-6) at our Sheffield Campus to learn weaving and next term students (years 2-4) will have the opportunity to learn to weave.
