At Sheffield School we have the privilege to witness most of our students start and complete their educational journey. We nurture and support the development of their foundation literacy and numeracy skills, and provide diverse experiences to foster a love for learning throughout their schooling. We aim to promote school belonging, while also developing their confidence, leadership, and mentoring skills. This is a photo taken this week of our Year 9-10 students reading to our Kindergarten students. Thank you, Bridie, Filly, Kelsey, Imogen, Tayla, Mia, Lily, and Hollie, for being such wonderful role models.
Book Week
Book Week is one of the highlights of our school year. It brings our whole school community together to celebrate the joy that reading and storytelling adds to our lives, while also highlighting the importance of developing strong reading skills. We extend our gratitude to our teachers and teacher assistants for their dedication to improving reading outcomes for our students, and we congratulate our students for their hard work and ongoing progress in reading. Our assembly was a fantastic celebration, and you can find some photos of the costumes in this newsletter. Thank you to all the parents for helping their children come to school dressed as their favourite characters, and well done to our students for your enthusiasm and creativity!
Sport
Our dedicated Health and Physical Education team continue to encourage students to participate in a variety of sports. Success is reflected not only in our students' active participation but also in their ability to connect with others, feel included, and build teamwork and self-esteem. Our students' willingness to attend training sessions, organise teams, umpire, and score during events enriches their experience. We are proud of our teams' achievements, including victories in the girls' football gala day and badminton gala days, as well as the accomplishments of students participating in club sports.
State Representative
Good luck to Hudson who will represent Tasmania in the National Cross Country this weekend at Symmons Plains. Hudson is a highly dedicated and determined young man and I am certain he will give his best effort in this event.
Attendance
During the winter months we often notice a decline in student attendance. This can be due to sickness and we understand this cannot be avoided. Teachers closely monitor attendance and endeavour to encourage participation and regular attendance.
Attending school every day gives your child every chance to develop the knowledge and social skills they need to create a positive future. Good habits begin with routine, regular attendance to school where students can learn, have a diverse range of experiences, connect with peers and school staff to form positive relationships. When your child attends school every day, it helps them to:
- Keep up with the learning program, and not fall behind
- Access every opportunity provided and find interests
- Make friends and maintain friendships
- Feel a sense of accomplishment
- Have a brighter future
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.

Staffing update
Congratulations to Olivia Stolp who was recently appointed as a permanent member of our teaching team at Sheffield School. We would like to congratulate Cooper Gardam on his appointment as our School Farm Trainee. Cooper completed his Certificate II in Agriculture with us and will now complete his Certificate III as part of his traineeship. We are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to a past student to continue his education and training at our School Farm.
External School Review
Next week Sheffield School will be undergoing a 4-day External School Review, Monday 2nd to Thursday 5th September. This is a process all schools go through, on a four yearly basis, that provides feedback on our current direction and recommendations for future work. A team of experienced school Principals will visit our site to conduct interviews with teaching staff, non-teaching staff, students and parents, as well as visiting classrooms. An external school review is part of the Department for Education Children and Young People’s commitment to improve the quality of our schools and the learning outcomes of our students.
Jamie Skirving
Acting Principal
Values shape our behaviour. They influence how we act, what we say and do, how we treat others, how we approach learning, and how we develop our sense of identity and self-esteem.
At Sheffield School, our core values—respect for learning, respect for others, and respect for ourselves—continue to guide everything we do. We regularly discuss these values with our students and recognise those who display these values.

Badminton
Sheffield School students have experienced great success recently whilst competing in the annual North West High Schools badminton challenge. The challenge was conducted at the Upper Burnie Sports Centre and saw all the major high schools along the coast competing.
Year 9/10 students competed first and both boys and girls teams did not drop a match on their way to clinching victory in their respective divisions.
Jack and Jed led the way for the boys, competing at number 1 and 2 all day and proving to be tough nuts to crack from the outset. Filly and Amanda proved competitive from the outset and set the standard for the team for the whole day. Well done girls.
A week later it was the Year 7/8 students to compete against the cream of the North West Coast. With a three pronged attack comprising of Hayley, Sophie and Indyka, the girls lead the team enthusiastically and finished the preliminary rounds tied with Burnie High school on the top of the ladder. This forced a play off and after some tense rallies and heart stopping stroke play, Sheffield succumbed to Burnie by one solitary game. Bad luck girls but well played.
The boys displayed strength across all lines and won all their games in impressive fashion, although Penguin School made us earn our final victory. Beau and Xavier led from the front, whilst T-J, Toby and Logan picked up the crucial wins in the latter games.
Although the students participated and played with excellent sportsmanship, the leadership they showed in umpiring, scoring and co-ordinating their games displayed them all in a positive light.
Winning Teams!

Soccer
The 2024 soccer season has come to an end! We had a fantastic season with 6 teams representing Sheffield School.
We would like to thank our wonderful volunteer coaches for their effort and commitment to our teams; training and coaching in all weather conditions did not go unnoticed. Maddison, Kylie, Kristen, Joe, Ashlea and Matt we really appreciate you and hope you will continue your coaching journey with our school.
One of our very generous soccer families organized and donated all 55 personalized player medals, they looked incredible and what a very special surprise for their last game!
Bullying - No Way
This year Sheffield School participated in the Bullying No Way: National week of action, 12 to 16 August 2024.
Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bullying prevention, and gives us an opportunity to connect with students, staff and school communities to implement workable solutions to prevent bullying.
During the week we engaged students in meaningful discussions and activities aimed at promoting empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity. We encourage parents and carers to take this opportunity to have open and honest conversations with their children about the impact of bullying and what they can do if they need support. You can visit the Bullying No Way website for tips around how to have this discussion.
Food and Fibre
Paddock to Plate - Early Childhood & Railton Campus
Food and Fibre Production classes have been learning about wheat. Students have learnt about how wheat is grown, harvested, and then milled into flour. We had a particular focus on how flour is used to make many different foods that we enjoy.
To compliment this learning, students have used flour to make cheese and vegemite scrolls. This week, students in Year 1 Duggan and Prep Hinrichsen had their turn in the kitchen. Everyone really enjoyed the experience and taste testing their cooking at the end.
Thank you for the support of our parent volunteers.
Guided Inter-Generational Learning Support (GIGLS)
Six primary students and six Tandara residents have joined forces for our new trial program GIGLS. Our GIGLS (Guided Inter-Generational Learning Support) team have been enjoying each others' company for over four weeks now! We look forward to sharing all the fun we have had at the conclusion of the program.

Polish Program
As part of our Career and Transition Planning program, Year 10 students participated in the Beacon Foundation’s POLISH program.
Student Representative Council (SRC)
As part of our Book Week celebrations last week, some of our Year 10 SRC students attended sessions at our library with Kinder Sullivan and 1/2A. The Year 10s spent time helping our younger students choose their library books and read stories to some very captive audiences. We feel very lucky to have the opportunity to make such great connections across our school.
