Dear Parents / Guardians
It has been a very enjoyable term at Sheffield School and it is hard to believe the end of term 1 is already here! Students have been focused on their learning and participated with enthusiasm in all the extra-curricular activities and opportunities available to them. Thank you to everyone involved with our school and community who continue to support and encourage our learners.
Reporting
Progress reports were sent home with students last week. These reports are designed to give you an overview of how your child has settled into their learning this year and it is hoped this will promote discussion at home to support their achievement and success. As always, if you have any concerns please contact your child's teacher through the school office.
Year 10 Student Representative Council (SRC)
Early this week, Miss Stolp and I had the pleasure of working with our year 10 SRC to explore leadership, identify some leadership role models, and highlight the personal attributes of our SRC emerging leaders. Throughout the school year this group will be mentored and provided with opportunities to develop their leadership skills through training and leading their own initiatives within our school community. It was motivating to hear them discuss their ideas for activities and events to promote positive relationships, to increase peer connection and school belonging. I feel confident this team of young leaders will have a positive impact on our school.
Student Achievement
Sheffield students continue to excel with three of our high school students heading interstate during the school holidays.
Jack is a talented young AFL footballer and he has been rewarded for his hard work and dedication to training over the off season with selection in the Tasmanian Devils under 16 team. During the school holidays Jack will be travelling to Sydney to play a practice game for the Tassie Devils against the Sydney Swans Academy. All the best Jack!
Congratulations to Hollie who will be representing Tasmania in the under 16 girls AFL Team during the school holidays. This Friday, Hollie will travel to Blacktown NSW for the National Carnival where Tassie will compete against the GWS Giants Academy and the Sydney Swans Academy. All the best Hollie, we are right behind you and look forward to hearing about your experience.
Hudson will be competing at the National Surf Carnival during the school holidays, representing the Devonport Surf Club. Hudson will travel to the Sunshine Coast, Queensland to compete in the beach sprints, beach flags and the 2km beach run. Hudson has been in terrific form, achieving some excellent results in Tassie this summer and we wish him much success at the National Carnival.
Green Team
We would like to introduce you to our Green Team for 2024, Myesha, Amarliah, Holley, Hailey, and Piper. The Green Team are responsible for collecting food scraps after lunch to distribute between our compost and chickens on our Sheffield Campus, as well as other animals at our school farm. They are also responsible for taking care of our 6 feathered friends, ensuring that their eggs are collected, and they have enough feed and water. The Green Team are excited to help organise our popular veggie and flower stalls in the months ahead.
School Bus Service
Kinetic have recently taken over the Claude Road School Bus Service. I would like to acknowledge the 40 years of service provided by the Kelly family from Claude Road. A number of drivers have contributed over the years including Sam Kelly who has had continuous involvement for 37 years! Thank you Sam, Kathy and your family for your contribution to our school community for such a long period.
Assemblies
Primary, Secondary and Railton Campus assemblies were held in week 8. These gatherings enable us to celebrate student achievement and provide students with an opportunity to share their learning and extra-curricular activities with each other and families. Each assembly was well attended by parents and we value your attendance. For many parents, we understand that work commitments make attending very difficult. From next term we are making a change to assemblies. We will hold two Kinder to Year 12 Assemblies per term to come together as a whole school and we are hopeful more parents will be able to attend and celebrate with us (Railton Campus Assemblies will continue, major assemblies will be combined). Assembly dates will be published early next term.

Inter-Primary Athletics
Our two Sheffield teams were very busy over two days representing Sheffield at Penguin. In the first few weeks of term, students ran in multiple trials during PE. From here, the top runners from 3-4 and 5-6 made up our inter-primary team. Our students competed in the 75m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, shot put and long jump.
Students who make the top three in their first race then progress to the semi final If students are successful in their semi-final, they then progress to the twilight carnival to compete in the final race.
Congratulations to Liam, Harper-Lee, Quinn, Tarrant, Max and Hailey for making the twilight team.

Inter-High Swimming Carnival - Wednesday 27 March
Late in Term One, the Sheffield School swimming team competed in the inter-high swimming carnival. The event was held at the Splash Aquatic centre in perfect conditions.
The team consisted of seven swimmers who had competed well during our swimming activities day and were looking for another challenge in the pool. Our team members generally filled all events within their age group and enjoyed the challenge of swimming against participants from other schools.
Team members also competed in relay races. Although we did not have enough team members to field our own team, we were able to combine with Devonport High School. It was very pleasing to see our students mixing with students from other schools and exhibiting great teamwork.
Special mention for Amanda and Hudson who competed in every event available to them and will be in contention for age group championship honours when results are announced.
The team displayed excellent behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the day, and this reflects positively on both the individuals and the school.
Well done team.

Devon U11 Netball
Congratulations to Scarlett, Immogen and Amelia who represented the Under 11 Devon Netball Team on the weekend.
The Under 11 Team fought hard and won the Burnie Carnival for 2024.
Well done girls!
ANZAC Day
Throughout Term 1, the focus in 9/10 has been on World War 1 and Australia’s involvement. This unit provides our students with a link to the local community, whereby Year 10s are given the opportunity to submit their essays to the Sheffield RSL. George McDonald and Stuart Wilson from the local RSL branch listened to selected student essays, carefully considering their choices. Congratulations to Felicity and Cailtin who were selected as winners of the RSL Anzac Writing Competition. Felicity will be reading her essay at the Dawn Service, and Caitlin will be reading hers at the 10am service prior to the march. Well done to all 9/10 students who worked so hard on this culminating task for our unit of work. We look forward to hearing Caitlin and Felicity at the services on Anzac Day.

On Friday 15 March 2024 14 Art students set off for a trip to Evandale to see the annual Glover Prize exhibition at Evandale, a competition held for national and international artists to paint their vision of Tasmanian Landscapes.
The students viewed and analysed the art and were interviewed and photographed by ‘The Examiner’.

Music News
Kate Fraser, a local Harpist, has been visiting music classes from year 1- 10. She has given students the opportunity to try the Harp and has talked about a FREE workshop that is being run in the first week of the school holidays. What an awesome opportunity to be a part of a wonderful community event!
Please see the attached flyer for information and contact details to register for the workshops.
Swimming Carnival
This term we once again held a swimming activities day for Year 3–6 students and selected secondary students. Approximately 150 students participated on the day with great enthusiasm.
Primary students participated in a range of novelty events including diving rings, kickboard races, noodle races, surfboard races and the hugely popular iron man race. This gave students the opportunity to race against both secondary students and members of staff.
The day also included a safety aspect with students utilising P.F.D’s (Personal Flotation Devices) and participating in a variety of races and skill activities.
Approximately 20 secondary students competed in a variety of races in preparation for the inter-high swimming carnival. This enabled students to practice and develop the confidence to participate in a range of different race strokes and distances.
Well done to all students who took the opportunity to participate in this event, the smiling faces and laughter indicated an enjoyable day for all.
SRC Report
Since being on the 2024 SRC we have already shown our leadership in many areas of the school. Many of us were involved in the school swimming carnival, helping and cheering on the Primary school students as well as competing in races ourselves.
Isabella and Rory attended the Sheffield RSL Annual Dinner. These students displayed our school values to the highest level and spent the evening talking with veterans and listening to stories. They mingled with members of Parliament and respected citizens of the community, making it an enjoyable evening for all. Well done to both of you on representing our school with such high standards. Our next collaboration with the local RSL will be the submission of selected Year 10 History essays. George McDonald, President of the RSL, will be coming to our school to listen to our essays and choose two to be read out on Anzac Day. This is a highly respected community link and a wonderful tradition at our school.
Earlier in the term we ran our first Staff vs Students lunchtime game. Fortunately, students came away with the win! We chose to run this event on Harmony Day, which is all about respect, inclusiveness and creating a sense of belonging for everyone. We look forward to running more of these Staff vs Student games, and hopefully we can continue winning!
We have many ideas for the remaining terms and look forward to you all being a part of them.
Hollie and Rory
