Dear Parents/Guardians
It is great to be back at work after a term of long service leave, and I feel privileged to be working with our whole school community as Acting Principal this term while Mr Daly continues his leave.
Research suggests children have better learning outcomes when they are connected to each other and connected to their community. Creating a school environment where students feel safe, supported and connected is our priority. We are very fortunate to have many opportunities within our school to foster positive relationships and create strong links with our amazing communities at Sheffield and Railton.
Before returning to school for term 2, Anzac Day was commemorated. Once again our local RSL Clubs invited our students to take part in local services. Kai is a member of our Year 10 SRC and a student who has attend Railton and Sheffield School since Kindergarten. It was a privilege to hear him read his essay at the Dawn Service at Sheffield where he outlined Australia's involvement in WWI and WWII, and acknowledged the commitment and sacrifices made by our service men and women. Thank you to our student leaders who represented our school community by joining in the march and laying wreaths at both the Railton and Sheffield Services. Congratulations to our Year 10 Anzac Day Essay Competition winners Kai and Talasha. Also our primary Anzac Art competition winners; Hailey, Lauren, Angel and Kai.

The Kentish Lions Club are regular supporters of our Breakfast Club and we have a number of volunteers who give up their time to come into school and provide a welcoming smile and a nutritious breakfast to start the day. Thank you to our staff Miss Bell, Mrs Oldenhof and Mrs Skirving for their work in supporting this, and Jan Crosswell from the Kentish Lions Club who coordinates her team of volunteers. I would also like to acknowledge our local businesses who donate food ingredients, Sheffield IGA Don Store and the Sheffield Fruit and Veggie Shed.
Our Student Representative Council members from primary and secondary classes have an important role within our school. It is their responsibility to set a good example for others and develop their leadership skills by working collaboratively to organise events. During term 1 our Year 10 SRC attended a leadership conference at Latrobe High School which included student leaders from other schools. They visited Tandara at the end of term 1 to connect with our elderly citizens and help them to celebrate Easter. Our primary and secondary SRC have a number of events and awareness campaigns in the planning process, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact these young leaders have in our school.
Notable student achievements
Congratulations to Hollie who has been selected in the Tasmanian Under 15 Football team. In the last couple of years Hollie has transitioned from soccer to football and excelled playing for the Latrobe Football Club Youth Girls Team. State selection is a reflection of not only her talent, but of the hard work and dedication she has put into training. Best of luck playing in Ballarat Hollie.
Dylan continues to shine at Endurance Horse Riding. He recently travelled to compete in a 2 day event called STER Easter Derwent Double at Glenelg Hamilton. This event involves an 80km ride each day. Dylan finished with the overall fastest time for the event and he also won a Best Managed Award for his horsemanship and ability. Dylan will compete in the Tom Quilty, perhaps the most famous endurance horse riding event in Australia. The event will be held in Queensland at the end of June this year, we will provide more information about this in the future.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the contribution Allison Hicks has made to our School Association, particularly in the role of School Association Chairperson. Allison has been an active community member especially at our Railton Campus and has worked closely with the School Association during the merger of the two schools. Allison has recently stepped aside as Chairperson but continues as a committee member. I would like to congratulate and welcome our new Chairperson Carl Morley, and on behalf of the School Association we are looking forward to working with you Carl.

Primary - Tuesday 23 May
Students will remain at school for this event with the addition of some obstacles along the course. Year groups will be allocated time slots to complete their race. Closer to the date, students will receive a letter indicating allocated race times.
To get into to the carnival spirit, we ask that all students wear their assigned house colours.
We urge all parents and carers to encourage their young people to make the most of this event and develop some lifelong memories of school life.
Secondary Cross Country Carnival - Wednesday 24 May
The carnival will be held at the school farm and will enable students to enjoy the most picturesque cross-country course on the North West Coast. Secondary students will begin their event from the new classrooms and will circumnavigate the perimeter of the farm for a distance of approximately 3.6 Kilometres.
The event provides the opportunity for athletes to display their best efforts whilst also encouraging walkers or joggers to participate. The Health and Physical Education Department has again included colour stations for those who wish to be coloured, (the track is also nice and boggy in spots).
Event times are as follows:
Year 7/8 Event | 11.45 am |
Year 9/10 Event | 1.45 pm |
Prep Hinrichsen School Farm Visit
Prep Hinrichsen visited our school farm on Tuesday, 9 May. This experience was a part of new learning in Science: Living and Non-Living Things.
Students were excited to have a trip in our ‘Sheffield School’ bus. This was followed by a tour around the farm by Mr Richmond.
We visited the school dairy, looked at cows, sheep, chickens, were able to hand feed goats and we even fed hay to Prep student, Ella’s horse!
The trip was finished with a tasty treat: a sheep cupcake and a flavoured milk.
Thank you to our amazing staff who helped make this day happen.
A special thank you to Trent & Karli for bringing Lucy (the horse) in, as well as Tracy and Quentin for bringing Poppy and Ralph (their goats) for a visit.

Food and Fibre Production
Early Childhood (Kinder - Year 2)
In Food and Fibre Production last week, students from Prep Hinrichsen, 1-2 Wivell, and 1-2 Duggan had the opportunity to get creative with apples. They had a choice of three toppings (coconut, cinnamon and mint) or they could combine all three for an extra taste sensation!
Our recipe was sourced from Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.

Primary (Years 3 - 6)
Thank you to everyone who supported our recent produce sale. Students in both early childhood and primary classes have been busy planting more seeds again this week. We will place them in our hydroponic system and once the seedlings are big enough, students will transfer them to outside garden beds to grow big enough for harvest. They have planted lettuce, spinach and rocket. Watch this space for updates!

Railton Campus
Students at our Railton classes have been exploring the differences between ‘Food’ and ‘Fibre’ with a focus on Fibre.
We have looked at samples of various fibres. Soon we will be creating with different fibres!

Secondary (Years 7-10)
Students in Year 7-10 Food and Fibre Production have had a busy start to Term 2 with a recent excursion to AGFEST agricultural field day and plenty happening on the school farm. This term year 7/8 students are focusing on dairy production both in Australia and Internationally. Students have also had the chance to assist our school farm manager Dippy to milk our school dairy cows in our new milking facility. Year 9/10 students will be focusing on sheep production of both wool and meat running in conjunction with our schools participation in the Tasmanian Merino Wether Challenge.

Year 5/6 Excursion to PCYC
On Wednesday 3 May 2023, students from 5/6 classes travelled to Burnie PCYC for some team building activities and to help develop leadership skills. We worked with Geoff who taught us about the four important life skills that will help you to be a better teammate. These skills are active listening, leadership, effective communication, and cooperation. Using these skills, we had to work in groups to complete obstacles together. Each team had two team leaders who had to focus on being a good leader by listening to their team ideas, communicating clearly and delegating tasks. It was such a fun day and everyone enjoyed having a go at each obstacle. These tasks improved our ability to work as a team and how to overcome our challenges in life.

Breakfast Club Early Childhood at Sheffield Campus
Breakfast Club has commenced in the Early Years area. This is held each Wednesday morning from 8:30 am – 9:00 am in the Family Zone room.
This is kindly supported by the “Sheffield Fruit and Veg” shop as well as the Kentish Lions Club.
Many thanks to Jan and Robin from the Kentish Lions Club, as well as Tiffiny, Eileen and Denise who have helped prepare and serve food each week.
We are looking to grow our team of volunteers. Volunteers need to have a current WWVP card. Volunteers do not need to commit to each week but can volunteer sporadically, eg. Once per term.
Please see Marya Bell to join the roster.
Thank you.

VAPING AND YOUNG PEOPLE
The rising number of children and young people vaping is a growing issue of concern in our community.
Electronic cigarettes (vapes) can be appealing to young people due to bright colours and flavours. But no vapes are safe as they are often full of harmful chemicals and nicotine. For this reason, vapes can be addictive and harmful for lungs, brain development and general health.
It is important to talk to your children about vaping. Try to be understanding, compassionate and non-judgemental as you support them to learn more about the dangers of vaping or in seeking support to quit.
Information on what vaping is, the impacts and how to support your child is available on the new Department for Education, Children and Young People webpage on vaping, which can be accessed here:

TasTafe Drysdale Hospitality Showcase
Interested Year 9-10 students had the opportunity to visit TasTAFE Drysdale last term to participate in a Hospitality Showcase.
We joined with students from Don College to learn about the Hospitality industry and participate in some barista, bar and kitchen workshops.
The students eagerly participated and were inspired by the industry professionals.
