Dear Families,
PRESENTATION ASSEMBLY
Our Presentation Assembly last Tuesday was very well supported, with representation from federal, state and local governments, local businesses and organisations, parents and community members.
The local community is extremely generous in its sponsorship of our school for which we are extremely thankful, and it was pleasing to see representatives of the various businesses and organisations participate in the assembly by presenting awards.
The achievements of our students were celebrated in a photo story, my report, and in the presentation of awards. All in attendance appreciated the quality of achievements by our award winners. Well done to Isabelle who won the Thomas Alexander Memorial Award for the best Year 10 results. Congratulations to all of our other award winners, listed within the newsletter.
At the assembly School Association Chairperson, Allison Hicks and I acknowledged the wonderful service provided by our Mayor, Kate Haberle, who has served the school community as a member of the School Association for 33 years, 22 as Secretary. Kate’s commitment and enthusiasm for the school and the young people within this community has been outstanding, and I know in her new role she will continue to advocate and work to ensure there are opportunities and supports in place within the municipality to allow our children to shine and succeed in their chosen pathways. Thank you Kate!
Finally, to those parents of Year 10 students who now end their association with the school, thank you for your support over the years and for allowing us at the Sheffield School the privilege of being a part of shaping your child’s development to where they are today; terrific young citizens, equipped with knowledge, skills, and personal traits that will hold them in good stead in the years to come.
STAFFING
At the end of each year we farewell a number of staff, and this year is no exception.
Mr Ryan Butler will not be returning to Sheffield next year, Mr Butler has accepted a position supporting students at another school, his professional and calm approach will be missed around the school.
After 12 months performing an acting AST role at Sheffield, Mr Anthony Lee will be returning to his substantive position at Ulverstone Secondary College. I would like to thank Mr Lee for his preparedness to step in and take on a teaching role when required, whilst balancing the responsibilities of the AST role. His calm and personable approach has been well received by staff, students and parents.
Miss Eden Gerke has decided to relocate interstate and will take up a teaching position in Queensland, this is very exciting for her and will no doubt bring with it experiences that will add to her already very effective teaching practice. She is a very caring and energetic young teacher, and I do hope to see her back at Sheffield at some point in the future.
Mrs Vos will be taking up a permanent appointment at Latrobe Primary School. Mrs Vos has taught across both our Sheffield and Railton campuses in her time at the school. She is a professional, hardworking, accomplished teacher, who has a flair for working with the younger students. We will miss Mrs Vos and wish her well in her new position.
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, after 21 years of service to the Sheffield community Mrs Moore will be transferring to Ulverstone Primary School. Mrs Moore is a dedicated educator, having taught primarily in the Early Childhood area during her time at Sheffield. She is a highly skilled teacher and has been instrumental in setting the platform for further learning for so many young people within our community. Mrs Moore will be sorely missed; we do wish her well in her new role at UPS.
Mrs Karie van der Velde will be transferring to Margate Primary School in the south of the state. Mrs van der Velde has served the Sheffield community for 24 years, the past 5 years at the Railton Campus. The majority of her teaching has been in the early childhood area. She is very comfortable teaching our youngest students, it is her work that sets the basis for the formal schooling, and across such a long span, she has impacted positively the development of so many young people. We do wish Mrs van der Velde well in this new and exciting chapter of her teaching career.
As a result of some of the above staffing movements we will be welcoming Mrs Melissa Berwick, Miss Georgie Duggan, Mr Richard Heathcote, Mr Toby Lutwyche, Mrs Amelia Lutwyche, and Mrs Georgiades, with Miss Olivia Stolp continuing at our school in 2023. Further information regarding staffing and specific roles will be confirmed in the first newsletter next year.
Finally, congratulations and thank you to all staff and students for the manner in which you have navigated yet another challenging year, have an enjoyable and safe holiday period and I look forward to the commencement of the 2023 year.
Ron Daly

INTER-HIGH ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The Sheffield School secondary athletics team competed in the North West High School Sports Association (N.W.H.S.S.A) inter-high athletics carnival at the Penguin athletics track on Monday 5 December.
The team comprised of 42 keen athletics fully committed to representing the plucky Sheffield School team. The teams’ main opposition for the day was the far larger Reece High School and Smithton High School.
The day started well with many placings in the 800m competition and Evlyn winning the Year 10 girl’s race. Moving on to 100m sprints, Jack and Jordan won their respective Year 8 and 9 boys heats. The 400m was an opportunity for Hudson to gain a first place and Hollie replicated this result in the Year 8 girl’s event. Evlyn and Eli completed a family double of first places in the 1500m, whilst Jack, Isabella and Isabelle ran strongly to win their 200 m heats.
The team also performed strongly in the field events with Javelin proving fruitful, Madeleine, Hollie and Neham all winning their events. Jack continued to dominate Year 8 boys with a win in the High Jump. Zavier and Madeleine joined him on the diocese. Annabelle was our lone Shot Putt winner with Jack and Evlyn receiving gold for Discus. Triple Jumpers Isabella and Jack backed up weeks of solid training with victories in their events.
Sheffield finished the day in third position only a handful of points behind eventual winners Reece High School. The members of the team displayed a high level of commitment. It was pleasing to see team members volunteering to fill in where there were gaps in the program. The team represented the school in a very positive manner with plenty of encouragement and teamwork on display throughout the day.
The H.P.E team are as proud as punch of the team’s performance, and thanks to those who took up the challenge of participating in this event, and the manner in which they competed against others.
SCHOOL SHOWS AND CATTLE HANDLING
Sheffield School students have been very busy preparing cattle and attending livestock shows this term. Our students have performed extremely well in both the Beef Cattle Handling and Junior Beef Cattle Judging Competitions. The final show for 2022 season will be held at Stanley this weekend where we have Ethan, Charlton and Beau competing in the State Final of the Beef Cattle Handling Competition.
NETBALL NEWS
This season Sheffield School entered three Primary School teams. We also had four students who joined with Leighlands Christian School to compete in the Secondary roster.
It has been fantastic to see our Netta teams competing each week with positive attitudes and a high level of enthusiasm. We welcomed some new players in the spring roster and numerous students who were in the winter roster, continued playing. Every week, our Netta teams have gained new skills that will be very helpful moving into next year.
The Sheffield Year 5/6 'Swishers' netball team finished their season on a high, making the A-division cut of the combined Year 5/6 teams. Over the course of both the Winter and Spring seasons they have had some great wins and hard fought losses. During this time they have bonded together as a strong group of friends, looking after each other both on court and at school. Most importantly they have had a lot of fun together and we are all proud of their achievements.

The HPE would like to thank all of the families for helping our students arrive at the games on time and all the extra jobs that come along with school sport.
A big thank you to our coaches for this season who have allowed our games to run so smoothly.
We would also like to thank our secondary students who have been running training sessions for the students in their lunchtimes.
Two of our players were also selected to play for the Devon U12's squad for the season. Ruby and Lily enjoyed three netball carnivals in Devonport, Launceston and Hobart. The Devon U12's also played in Division 3 of the high-school competition where they finished 3rd on the ladder - an outstanding result.
We hope to see all players back again next year for some more netball action!
