Dear Families
Where has the year gone, with only 4 weeks remaining in the school year before a well-earned break for students and staff! The past few weeks have certainly been packed with a wide range of experiences for students; excursions, carnivals, school show, swimming and water safety, activities day, with many more events and activities to follow in the lead up to the end of the year.
Information regarding some of these special events / activities will have been distributed through students either within letters, Schoolzine or our Facebook page; if you require any additional information or are unsure of details pertaining to your student’s involvement in some of these events please contact the school office on 6491 8222 or speak with your child’s class teacher.
Staff Recognition
Congratulations to our Assistant Principal, Catrina Davies and Education Facility Attendant, Pauline Aylett who were recently acknowledged at an event held at Devonport High School for 25 years’ service to the Department.
I would also like to acknowledge Tammy Huett and Susan Kennerley who have completed additional study as a part of the department’s workforce development strategy, and successfully achieved a Graduate Certificate of Career Development and Associate Degree – Applied Business respectively. The committed service and desire to grow in their roles through service and further learning is a great example to others within our school community. Congratulations!
Class Structures 2023
As indicated in the last newsletter planning for 2023 is well underway, with decisions being made regarding class structures for 2023. When considering class structures/combinations, student needs are at the centre of our deliberations, however our staffing profile, flexibility to accommodate future enrolments, and resourcing levels, are elements that need to be factored in when determining class combinations. To this end I can confirm that in 2023 we will be required to move forward with three 7/8 and three 9/10 composite core classes. This year this was the case in our Year 7/8 area, but as the smaller groups move through the school this has necessitated this approach across the 7-10 sector. If you have any questions regarding this change please don’t hesitate to contact me at school.
Athletics Carnival
Last Wednesday we held our annual athletics carnival in beautiful conditions, with students participating enthusiastically over the day. Students across all years were willing to have a go and do their best with the objective being to have fun and add to the point’s tally of their house. Congratulations to the winning house Roland, a reflection of the consistent efforts and achievements of Roland’s students across each year group!
Thank you to all staff for their support of the day, and particularly to our Health and Physical Education staff, for their organisation and preparation of students leading up to the carnival and in conjunction with Mr Martin for the work behind the scenes in preparing the grounds and tracks.
Remembrance Day
The school was able to hold a Remembrance Day Service on Friday 11 November in the Recreation and Related Arts Building. Remembrance Day is a time to pause and respect those who sacrificed and served our country. Thank you to our student leaders, Evlyn, Olava, Kartia, Isabelle, Tahli and Ruby who contributed to the formalities of the service. The local RSL continue to support our school by attending and participating in the commemorative event. The following students representing each sector of the school laid a wreath at the service:
- ECE+Railton: Isobel and Edmund
- Primary: Lily and Marli
- Secondary : Ruby and Eli
School Show
Last Friday we held our Sheffield School Show, which features numerous classes across three main areas of competition: Hoof and Hook competition, which judges the animal; Junior Judging, which allows competitors the opportunity to deliver their knowledge and understanding of the various aspects of the animal; and Cattle Handling, which involves both the preparation and leading of the animal around the show ring.
This is the first time we have been able to conduct our show for three years due to Covid restrictions and this year it was wonderful to be able to also showcase our newly developed facilities and show ring.
The show was attended by staff, students, parents, and members of the public. The judge, Andrew Raff from King Island was most impressed with the facilities at the farm and the Food and Fibre program that our students have the opportunity to access. As a judge he was very informative, and I am sure all competitors and many spectators went away with some learnings from the day, I certainly did!
Our students performed extremely well in both the Beef Cattle Handling and Junior Beef Cattle Judging Competitions. The final show for 2022 season will be held at Stanley this weekend where we have Ethan, Charlton and Beau competing in the state final of the Beef Cattle Handling Competition.
A more detailed report about the cattle handling team’s season will be provided in the next newsletter.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the members of the show committee, and all staff, and volunteers that contributed to a successful event.
End of Year Reports
A reminder to families that end of year reports will be distributed to students on Friday 16 December.
The report will show your child’s learning achievement on a 9-point visual scale which replaces A-E ratings for students in Prep to Year 10.
The 9-point scale shows more specifically where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level.
There will be no teacher comments on the report.

Staff Farewell
Ordinarily, I would leave it to my final newsletter to acknowledge leaving staff, however in this case due to the staff member taking Long Service Leave for the final three weeks of the year I have taken the opportunity to do so in this newsletter.
After 21 years of service to the Sheffield community Mrs Moore will be transferring to Ulverstone Primary School. Mrs Moore is a dedicated educator, having taught primarily in the Early Childhood area during her time at Sheffield. She is a highly skilled teacher and has been instrumental in setting the platform for further learning for so many young people within our community. Mrs Moore will be sorely missed; we do wish her well in her new role at UPS.

The Readers' Cup
On Friday 11 November we went to Spreyton Primary School for the Readers’ Cup.
The Readers’ cup is a day to celebrate reading with other schools who also bring teams of six. Leading up to the event, we read 6 books and created a short presentation on the book “The Fabulous Friend Machine” by Nick Bland.
Once at the Readers’ Cup, we answered quizzes for every book we read. We then watched other school’s presentations and after lunch we watched more presentations, there were 10 altogether.
It was fun to see the other presentations from other schools as there were some very creative and thoughtful responses!
We presented our puppet show on “The Fabulous Friend Machine”.
The winner of the 2022 Readers’ Cup was Devonport Primary School.
Everyone had fun and if you’re a 5/6 student next year and would like to go you should really consider it.
Sophie, Mia, Tyson, Couper and Sharni.
2022 Athletics Carnival
The 2022 Sheffield School Athletics carnival was held on Wednesday 16 November. The weather gods were looking down on us and produced a day that was receptive to top quality athletics.
The Secondary section of the carnival was this year held on the Recreation Ground. Mr Penney and Miss Baldock spent endless hours measuring and painting and produced a top-class track, worthy of top-class athletics. The secondary boys did not let us down, with Brady, Jobie and Olava performing well in the year 10 boys’ competition and Kai, Jordan and Tabius completing some scorching runs in Year 9 competition. The secondary girls were not to be outdone, Evlyn and Isabelle pushed each other to the limit all day, whilst, the Year 9 girls as a group displayed excellent participation and spirit throughout the whole day. Well done Year 9 girls. The junior secondary section also produced some excellent competition in both the year 7 and 8 categories as students began to master the skills of track and field.
The Early Childhood and Primary carnival had loads of fun as they completed competitions in Hippo Hoppo, gum boot throwing, vortex and rocket throws and various races. The smiles on faces and laughter made it all worthwhile.
At the time of writing points are still being amassed with some groups yet to complete the triple jump and also the 1500m race, this will be done this week.
Upon completion we will be able to release the final point and also the year champions.
Car Data Survey
On Tuesday, 8 November 2022, 5-6A and 5-6C from Sheffield School went for a mini excursion out to see the Main Street of Sheffield. 5/6B also went on a different day. The reason we did this was because we completed a car data survey to see what the most common make, model and colour of the cars passing Sheffield School. Before we went we posed our own questions and made predictions on the answers. Following up to that we had to make a table to tally up the cars. When both of our classes finished , everyone made a column graph to compare and analyse the numbers. All of it was so fun, so thanks to all the teachers that helped.

Year 5 and 6 PCYC Excursion
Last Thursday the 5/6s went on an excursion to the PCYC in Burnie. When we arrived our guide Geoff greeted us and explained to us how working in a team is so important and introduced us to the obstacle course. There were many fun and interesting obstacles, such as a tyre swing and a tyre ladder. There was also a Cargo Net challenge. The goal of this challenge was to get everybody under and through the cargo net in the shortest time possible. We didn’t win the challenge but we had a great time trying. In conclusion we all had a great time and we would like to thank everyone who helped make our excursion possible.

SCHOOL NURSE
Dear School Families
Some students have confided in staff their concerns that a number of students are experimenting with vaping and quite a big number appear to be vaping regularly. The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the issue and to give you resources if you feel your child is involved in this kind of behaviour. The issue of vaping is, of course, not isolated to the School but is a national problem exacerbated by the apparent ease of access and high intensity marketing, particularly on social media.
Our aim as a School is to take a positive and supportive approach to this issue, encouraging students to modify harmful behaviours. We are particularly concerned with the negative health effects vaping can have on students and we are working to educate students of the dangers of inhaling dangerous chemicals.
Our goal is to partner with parents to help support our students in making positive and appropriate decisions for themselves and their future. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child/children about e-cigarettes and vaping. Please see attached for some guidelines about how you might approach this conversation. If you have any concerns about this issue and you would like to follow up further, please contact your School.
The following resources from Quit Tasmania provide current information about the health risks associated with vaping, common myths associated with e-cigarettes and the legal sanctions on vaping in Tasmania. There is also this flyer on Talking about vaping with young people.
E-cigarette Fact Sheet for parents and teachers
Thank you for working with us to educate the young people in our community so they can make good decisions for themselves that promote wellbeing and good health
