Dear Parents/Guardians
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break ready for what will be a very busy term, culminating in the mid-year reporting.
Covid Update
As the wider community continues to be impacted by Covid-19, we have observed some easing of restrictions, particularly relating to close contact guidelines. What this means for schools, as well as a number of other changes to how we are managing Covid-19 are summarised below;
- If your child is a close contact – and importantly, symptom free – they can attend school. They would however need to record a negative rapid antigen test each day prior to attending school (daily testing for a 7 day period). Please contact the school if you require more RATs. Parents do not need to inform the school if their child is a close contact, only if they test positive.
- You may have already noticed that parents and carers will no longer receive notification every time there is an individual case in a class or year level, unless there are students or staff that are medically vulnerable. Schools and Public Health will continue to monitor Covid-19 cases, and if there is an increase in cases advice will be provided regarding actions families will need to take.
- Many of our students have accessed the VLC (Virtual Learning Community) during term 1, due to being away from school, having contracted Covid-19, been a close contact or due to medical vulnerabilities. The VLC was only ever designed to be a short-term measure for students absent from school due to Covid-19, as a result the expectation going forward would be that the VLC will still be accessible for those short-term absences due to being Covid positive, with all other students returning to face to face learning at school.
As we move through term 2 a reminder it is important that we continue to implement the following Covid safety measures to assist with managing case numbers within our school and keeping people safe.
- Stay home if unwell
- Maintain 1.5m physical distancing for adults
- Wear a mask (if required indoors – adults and students Yr 7-12)
- Maintain regular hand hygiene
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community safe.
Introduction of School Kiosk at Sheffield
The Department takes the safety of children and young people extremely seriously, and are committed to making our systems, policies, processes and procedures as strong as they can possibly be to ensure the safety of all children and young people in our care. To support this, every school and college has recently been provided with a School Kiosk, at Sheffield these will be located at each of our 3 sites; Sheffield and Railton Campuses – admin area; School Farm – main entrance of classroom.
The School Kiosk application is designed to reduce the time spent by staff checking students and visitors in and out of schools and will replace the school’s manual student and visitor sign in books.
The kiosk has four key functions:
- Log students’ late arrival and early departure to and from a school.
- Update student attendance records in EduPoint.
- Log visitors into and out of school
- Check the validity of DoE RWVP for school visitors where applicable.
ANZAC DAY
ANZAC Day continues to bring our community together on a day where the nation pauses to commemorate the men and women who have served our nation in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. In the lead up to ANZAC Day, students from across our school engage in learning to create awareness about the meaning and the significance of this day for our country. Primary and early childhood classes take part in activities to build their understanding that enables them to express what ANZAC Day means to them through art work which is entered in our annual RSL ANZAC Day Competition. In the secondary area WWI and ANZAC Day is studied as part of the year 10 History curriculum. As a culmination of this learning, students write an essay to explore the meaning of the acronym ANZAC and the significance this has for our country.
Members of the RSL select the best two essays and the winning primary and early childhood art work.
Congratulations to our 2022 RSL ANZAC DAY Competition Winners.
These students received $100 prize money and both read their essays on ANZAC Day.

Before School Supervision of Students
A reminder to parents that staff do not commence before school duty until 8.25am (Railton Campus) 8.30am (Sheffield Campus), therefore there is no direct supervision of students arriving early. Students arriving prior to this time are able to wait sensibly in the student entrance courtyard (Yrs 3-12), on the seats outside classrooms (Yrs K-2), undercover walkway (Railton Campus), although where possible we would encourage students not to arrive before the supervised times.

2022 Cross Country
Our HPE team would like to remind secondary students that we will be holding our 2022 Cross Country on 10 June. The carnival will be held at the school farm and will enable students to enjoy the most picturesque cross-country course on the Northwest Coast!
In 2022, we will once again be including the colour run element to the course. Students can opt in to be covered in colour or they may choose to complete the course without. When approaching a station, students will be given a choice as to which lane they will run through.
For those students intending to be coloured, it is mandatory that you bring a full change of clothes. It will not be acceptable for students to return to school after their race with colour still on. There will be opportunities for students to wash off and get clean prior to returning to school.
Our coloured powder is made from 98% corn starch and 2% colour pigments. The powder is non-toxic and non-flammable. Please be aware that students who experience respiratory issues, allergies or skin conditions may choose to opt out of the colour experience as it could possibly cause irritation.
If you are interested in finding out more about our colour being used on the day, please visit the URL below.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this event will be spectator free. We hope to see all students there and ready to complete their races with or without colour.
Education Minister, Roger Jaensch's Visit
Courtsey of the Advocate, Thursday 19 May
Picture and Article by Rodney Woods
Students are getting hands-on agricultural experience in a contemporary physical environment after the completion of a $3 million upgrade of Sheffield School Farm.
The funding, announced in 2018, provided students with a new dairy, shed, multipurpose learning building, extensive irrigation system and other contemporary agricultural modern facilities.
Education Minister Roger Jaensch attended the school on Wednesday to tour the upgraded facilities.
Joining him was students of the school and teacher Jamie Skirving, who explained how the upgrades would help the students.
"There are two parts to the revitalising school farms initiative from a student point of view," teacher Jamie Skirving said.
"The first part is the awareness of food and fibre and where it comes from and the other part is seeing it as a viable career option for them by getting more students involved in the industry.
"The new dairy is a really good hands-on practical teaching and learning facility but also the technology in the dairy enables us to look at that from a business sense and that's the part of the program that we want to grow.
"That's because there are a lot of jobs in agriculture off-farm or supporting farmers."
Mr Jaensch said the upgrades had set up the school for the next generation.
"We have young people who now have the opportunity of doing Certificate II in Agriculture here and honing a range of skills relevant to the economy of the region," he said.
"We are doing this in blue ribbon, agricultural, real estate.
"This is one of the best places for farming in Australia and in the world and we deserve to be able to give our young people access to learning about how to do it as well as they possibly can so they can lead and innovate and grow the economy based on the soil, water and sunshine that we have here."

INTRODUCING OUR NEW MUSIC TEACHER
Hello everyone, my name is Tessa Lee. I'm a music teacher, and I've joined the Sheffield team on Tuesdays, working with Year 7/8 and 9/10 music classes. I'm really enjoying getting to know the students, and looking forward to helping them reach their musical goals in 2022.
Speaking of musical goals, a big event for high school students all over Tasmania, is the annual Rock Challenge. The NW heat is scheduled for 5 September at the Menai Hotel in Burnie. The winners will get to perform in Hobart in the finals and meet and watch other high calibre bands/soloists from around Tasmania. I encourage all interested high school musicians to start planning and rehearsing for this awesome performance opportunity!
