Dear Families
School Satisfaction and Wellbeing Surveys
During the period Monday 24 August through to Friday 4 September we will be conducting School Satisfaction and Student Wellbeing Surveys. The School Satisfaction Survey will provide an opportunity for parents and staff to give important feedback on what the school does well and where we can improve. Questions cover a range of topics about our school.
All responses are secure and anonymous.
All parents and staff are invited to participate. Letters will be distributed early next week.
We encourage you to complete the survey to give our school a clear direction for future programs and services for students.
Please note: In 2020 all students Year 4 – 12 will be undertaking a Wellbeing Survey that will incorporate elements of the satisfaction survey. A letter with more information was sent home with students recently, and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you have a child in Years 4-12 and you didn’t receive a letter, please contact the school.
Parents and visitors to the school
As mentioned in the previous newsletter with some easing of government restrictions, it has been pleasing to be able to welcome parents and visitors back to our school site this term. A reminder to ensure the safety of our schools and community, it is important that we all adhere to the current requirements and preventative measures.
- Hand hygiene - regular washing with soap and water or hand sanitiser
- Physical distancing of adults 1.5m
- Don't enter the school if you are unwell
If you need to be onsite for a purpose other than drop off or pick up, such as to attend LiL (Launching into Learning), meeting with a teacher, attending an assembly, parent help, or other reasons that require you to be onsite for a longer period of time it is also a requirement to complete a Visitor Health Screening Form. The form can be downloaded and completed and brought in on the day.
Upcoming Assemblies
For those parents / carers that would like to attend the upcoming assemblies scheduled for week 7 (Thursday 3 September) it will be important that all of the above mentioned requirements are met. To ensure we are able to meet the requirements around physical distancing we would also ask that any parent / carer planning on attending please notify the administration staff on 64918222 of their intention to attend. This will enable us to make sure the seating provided will cater for the numbers of adults attending. As mentioned above, a pre-completed Visitor Health Screening Form can be downloaded, completed and brought in on the day.
Celebrations /Events Term 4
Over the past week our administration staff have received some queries from parents regarding end of year events, such as Year 10 Celebration Dinner (Thursday 10 December), Presentation Day Assembly (Tuesday 8 December) and the Arts Concert (Thursday 3 December). The current advice from the department is that activities that may involve large gatherings of adults remain under review, with further updates based on Public Health advice to be provided later this term. We are certainly hopeful that each of the events mentioned above will be able to take place, however it is likely that there will need to be some changes to the normal arrangements to meet the Public Health requirements.
As further advice is made available this will be shared with the school community.
Cybersafety
There have been concerns raised about some of our students unknowingly sharing personal information online via social media. Parents please have a conversation with your children about the dangers of sharing personal information and how users should regularly check their account privacy settings in the Apps, social media and online gaming sites that they use. The following website has some very useful information https://www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/how-to/social-media-online-chat

- Administration of medication must be authorised by a parent or guardian using Authorisation of Student Medication Form A (Non-prescribed medication). and Authorisation of Student Medication Form B - completed by a doctor, pharmacist or practice nurse or prescribed medication.
- Medications supplied to the school must be in date (not expired) and in the original containers or in a Webster-pak prepared by a pharmacist.

HEALTH NURSE
Just keep breathing! Breathing Exercises for Early Childhood
In the Early Childhood area some of the Year 7 students have been helping teach the younger children some breathing techniques each week. These techniques are meant to help your children calm down and relax when faced with stressful or overwhelming situations. There is a physical reason why deep breathing is so important.
To help understand why deep breathing and calming coping skills are so important, let’s have a quick lesson on your Autonomic Nervous System. The Autonomic Nervous System controls the automatic systems in your body that you don’t think about - things like breathing, digestion and heart rate.
Flight, Fight or Freeze (Sympathetic Nervous System)When you experience a stressful event your body automatically goes into what is known as “flight, fight or freeze” mode. Your heart rate increases, your stomach stops digestion and your breathing becomes more shallow.
Rest and Digest (Parasympathetic Nervous System)
When you are calm, your body is in what is known as “rest and digest” mode. Your breathing is normal, your muscles are relaxed and your heart rate is normal.
The goal of calming exercises is to get yourself from “flight, fight or freeze” mode back to “rest and digest” mode. Deep breathing helps get more oxygen into your bloodstream, opening up your capillaries. It has a physical effect on your body to help you calm down and lower stress.
Over the next few weeks we will be exploring fun playful ways to work on deep breathing.

LEARNING IN FAMILIES TOGETHER (LiFT)
What’s On?
Term 4 is a busy one but we promise to squeeze in at least one more family challenge. Maybe some maths? Maybe some lollies? Maybe both?
Whether we like it or not, maths is everywhere and is part of everyday life. It is necessary to have an understanding of maths concepts to help with most tasks we undertake as humans. Whether your child is 5 or 15, now is a great time to be talking about and practising maths whenever you can, to boost their maths competency.
Please reach out to your child’s teacher or liftsheffield@gmail.com if you would like help supporting your child in maths.

Anxiety in Children
2020 has been a difficult one for everyone. Although children are very resilient, we can see a change in them during and after a big event, such as a pandemic! Follow this link from GoZen for some really useful ways to help calm and work through your child’s anxious times.
Kinder- Prep Story Sacks
It has been great seeing Story Sacks rolled out for our Kinder/Prep students at Railton and Sheffield. Using these Story Sacks in your home benefits your child’s oral language considerably, fosters their love of books and reading; and in turn, improves their literacy outcomes throughout their schooling. Disability Standards for Education
The Disability Standards for Education were established in 2005 to ensure students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as students without disability.
The 2020 Review of the Standards is underway. We want to hear from currnet, former and prospective students with disability, their families and carers, advocates, educators, and other members of the public.

Illuminate Education's NextGen Challenge - The Athena Project
Sheffield School's 2020 NextGen Challenge Team has carried on our school's strong tradition in this competition. For the week of the challenge students came up with an innovative business idea, researched it's feasibility, prepared the financial and marketing reports for investors, completed the first three months and first year's financial projections, made three advertisements, a brochure, a short video and a website, and lastly, prepared a 5-minute film summarising all work they completed throughout the week.
Our team won the Best Business Plan and Financial Tables Award, which is the top judge-awarded prize, and Second Place Overall Winner.
Their project built on their experiences during the Covid-19 lockdown, building on what they saw as strengths and opportunities presented by online learning presented by their teachers. They named themselves The Athena Project, after the Greek goddess of wisdom.
Everyone in the competition chose different roles based on the different jobs involved in running a business. Here are the team members and their positions:
Laura, Year 10 - General Manager, in charge of the business plan, staff management and the spokesperson for The Athena Project
Jorja, Year 9 - Assistant Manager, also critical assistant to the Marketing, IT and Financial teams
Jarrah, Year 8 - Head of Marketing, in charge of marketing research, sustainability analysis and preparation of marketing materials
Alexandra, Year 9 - Financial Controller, in charge of forecasting start-up costs, profit and loss tables and also material and real estate acquisitions
Jessica, Year 9 - IT Professional. Responsible for all filming, web content design and other IT tasks
Pearl, Year 9 - Assistant to Head of Marketing. Responsible for extensive research and compilation of marketing reports.
Charlee, Year 8 - Assistant to the Financial Controller. Responsible for much of the research that was used by the financial controller in compiling the team's financial reports. Also created the team's logo.
All team members performed well above expectations, and were often complimented on their dedication and teamwork by judges. They are one of the strongest teams I have had the pleasure to supervise, and their hard work, dedication and cohesiveness makes us all very proud of their accomplishments.

School Uniform Price List, Term 3, 2020 - Note price increases.
Each week, one student is chosen by their class teacher for demonstrating the focus School Value or Behaviour, to receive a Golden Ticket to the Principal’s Afternoon Tea, a very special occasion. The first one of these for the term is being held next week.
In week 2 of this term, our School Value focus was on Respect for Learning and students were awarded tickets based on their outstanding efforts in this area.
Recipients of Golden Tickets in week 2 were Toby (5/6B), Matthew (5/6A), Wesley (3/4A), Cameron (5/6C) Isabella (3/4B), Keira (5/6D)
In weeks 3 and 4, we aligned our focus with the Department of Education’s Focus value - Courage. This relates strongly to our Respect for Self value, where we are recognising students’ ability to have a go, ‘bounce back’, and have a growth mindset.
Recipients in week 3 were: Mathew (5/6C), Ace (5/6D), Levi (3/4 A), Jett (3/4B) and Rory (5/6B).
And this week’s recipients are: Dylan (5/6D), Peyton (3/4A), Isabella (5/6B), Mia (5/6A) Deborah (5/6C) and Abbey (5/6A).
Congratulations to all of these students, we are sure they are very much looking forward to their afternoon tea!
The 2020 junior soccer season has kicked off and our school has three teams competing; Under 7, Under 8 and Open 5. Due to lower playing numbers, some Sheffield School students have joined with other school teams and are doing a great job. Everyone has adjusted well to the new normal of hand sanitiser and elbow bumps!
Players have shown incredible teamwork, improvement, sportsmanship and resilience; representing the school perfectly.
Meercroft Park, Devonport on Saturday mornings is the place to be! Look for the yellow socks.
Student Wellbeing Survey (Years 4 - 12)
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Years 4-12
The wellbeing of our students is important to us.
To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Year/s 4-12 at Sheffield School will be taking part in a wellbeing survey.
The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: 24 August – 18 September
Who: Years 4 -12
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4-12 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact Mrs Davies on 6491 8222.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
The staff and students of Sheffield School's 11-12 Program are excited to announce that Year 12 student Ella-Grace has been offered a place at University of Tasmania (UTas) next year.
Ella-Grace is the first graduate of Sheffield's 11-12 Program to get an offer from a university. We are all very proud of her and wish her the best of luck in her future academic career. This is a milestone for both Ella-Grace and the 11-12 Program!
