Over the last couple of weeks our students have had the opportunity to showcase their talents, and personal qualities through a number of significant events. These events were a terrific advertisement for the Sheffield School within the wider community. Thank you to all that contributed to the success of each event.
Remembrance Day Service
Last Monday 11 November, we held a Remembrance Day Service. Students, staff, members of the Sheffield RSL Sub Branch, and the public were in attendance. Senior students Tylar Burr and Taylah Watling did an excellent job conducting the service.
Mr Jim Austin, Sheffield RSL Sub Branch Vice President led the school through the ode, minutes silence and rouse.
Jarrah Behrmann paid tribute to the memory of our brave service people by reading a poem written by past student Michael Dunn titled ‘Son of a Hero’.
Students’ representing each section of the school presented wreathes in respect of those service people that have lost their lives in wars and peace keeping missions;
Early Childhood - Kiera Griffiths and Chloe Cocker
Primary - Joshua Lowry and Charlton Skirving
Secondary - Ethan Duff and Bethany Cobbin
At our Railton Campus a service also occurred, with Amber Chatterton and Georgia Richardson-Hume, two of senior SRC members leading the proceeding, with the whole campus also observing a period of silence to remember those servicemen and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifice in wars and peacekeeping missions. Mila Bos and Sapphire Hibble presented a wreath on behalf of the Railton Campus at their service.
Thank you to all those students for contributing to this important school and community event.
School Show
This year’s show proceeded in what ended up being reasonable conditions, with the weather either side of the Friday wet and windy. It also marked the last show prior to the commencement of the $3 million infrastructure redevelopment, in 2020 we will start a new chapter in the history of the school show, with the show ring being sited further to the south, and the facilities creating a new level of comfort and practicality for competitors, spectators and the animals. Exciting times ahead at the farm! Once again our students performed very well, experiencing success in both cattle handling and junior judging competitions.
Congratulations to all of our students who prepared cattle and competed on the day. We had many individual class winners in handling competitions, continuing the success from recent shows across the state.
Thank you to all of our sponsors, judges and volunteers for making our School Show so successful, a particular thank you to Mr Skirving, Mr Barber, Steph McNab and the Show Committee for their tireless work leading up to the event.
Detailed results are included in this newsletter.

Athletics Carnival
Last Friday we held our annual athletics carnival, with 86% of our student population attending and participating enthusiastically in the day. Students across all Years were willing to have a go and do their best with the objective being to have fun and add to the point’s tally of their house. The winning house and secondary track and field champions will be announced at an assembly later in the term.
Thank you to all staff for their support of the day, and particularly to our Health and Physical Education staff, Mr Penney, Mr Hays and Miss Baldock for their organisation and preparation of students leading up to the carnival and to Mr Von Stieglitz for the work behind the scenes in preparing the grounds and tracks.

25 Years’ Service Awards
This Monday I will have the pleasure of attending a Department of Education awards presentation to be held in Burnie recognising staff that have completed 25 years’ service. This year we have four staff from our school who will be recognised; Debbie May, Julie McCarthy, Steph McNab and Susie Hinrichsen. Each of these staff have made wonderful contributions to our school and impacted positively the lives of many young people over their careers. Congratulations!!
Presentation Day Assembly
Tuesday 10 December parents and community members are invited to attend our Presentation Day Assembly. The assembly will commence at 11.30 am in the Recreation and Related Arts Building.
Student Achievements
Year 5/6 Sheffield School Cricket Team travelled to Blundstone Arena, Bellerive to compete in Cricket Tasmania's Year 5/6 Knockout Cup on Friday 15 November.
The team competed exceptionally well winning two out of three games, only losing to the eventual winning team - Lauderdale Primary School.
The team showed great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Roland Skirving was given an opportunity to participate in Cricket Tasmania's recording that we're hoping will be available to share in the future.
Well done team!

Come along and see what’s available to buy - food items, drinks, arts and craft gifts, ranging from small handmade notebooks, handcrafted jewellery and bags, along with bug hotels, and coat racks.
Students have been working hard to produce some very high quality items, perfect for the extra Christmas gift!
We were completing a Fermi maths question during maths in 8B. ‘How many students could we fit in our classroom?’
There was lots of measuring and problem solving going on.
